Converting Mac Icons to Windows Icons

Some people think that there is a lot more professional 32-bit icons for MAC OS than for XP or Vista in the Internet. But Mac graphics may be simply converted into the *.ico format and applied for Windows. The detailed directions on this task are below.

Downloading and extracting from the archive

Mac graphics in the Web are often archived. Archives can be of two types: with the *.sit extension and with two extensions *.sit.hqx. A very rare type is *.sit.sitx, they should be processed in the same way as *.sit.hqx. To unpack icons from the archive you require an archiver. Note that you need an archiver, which reads the macintosh archives and works in Windows. The most common of such archiver is Stuffit. It can be downloaded here: www.stuffit.com. Standard Edition 8.0 or more recent is suggested. The installation file is quite big (8 Mb). Stuffit consists of the packer and extractor. The extractor can be used free of charge for unlimited time.

"Stuffit standard" is quite a capricious so make sure to do all the steps just how it is described below.

  1. Launch Stuffit Expander.
  2. Drag and drop your *.sit archive into Stuffit. Otherwise, go to the File-Open menu item to choose the file.
  3. Now, find and choose only the icons themselves in the archive, if not the software will abort during packing. Choose all required items by pressing … or ….. After that, in the main menu select Expand-Extract.
  4. In the "Extract Dialog" window that will open, press Browse and select where the icons will be unpacked. Press OK. When you have made all the steps correctly, you will see the extracted files in the specified directory.
  5. If the extraction process completed successfully, close Stuffit. The unpacking is done but there are other tasks to be done.

Transforming to Windows icons

Now you require one of the following programs: IconLover, ArtIcons Pro or IconXP. They can quickly understand Macintosh® icons and turn them into Windows® graphics in seconds.

You can work with .icns and .rsrc files the same way you work with images of other types: open them using the menu, drag and drop them into the program window, add to icon libraries.

Some Macintosh® icons contains only 128x128 size. In this situation, you will have to do 16x16, 32x32 and 48x48 subicons. You can do it with ArtIcons, IconLover or IconXP and the Tools - New Image Format menu option.

Then, just delete unneeded options (for example, monochrome) from the icons and save them as .ico files!

Extracting icons from *.sit.hqx. files

To complete this process, you will use one other application - TurboZIP (5.0 or newer).

Open it. Then in the application toolbar click "Open" and select *.hqx in the "file types" menu. In the left window you will see the *.sit.hqx file and in the right box - just *.sit. Now just drag them using the coursor into any folder (for example, the desktop). After that, unpack the *.sit archive as described above. The only disadvantage of the program is that it is not really stable.
