Converting Mac Icons to Windows Format

Some people think that there is much more quality 32-bit icons for MAC OS than for Windows in the Web. However Mac graphics can be easily transformed into the *.ico files and applied for Windows. The complete directions on this task are below.

Loading and extracting from the archive

Mac icons in the Internet are often archived. Archives can be of different types: with the *.sit extension and with two extensions *.sit.hqx. A very rare type is *.sit.sitx, they have to be processed in the similar way as *.sit.hqx. To unpack files from the archive you will need a special software. Note that you need an archiver, which knows the MAC archives and works in Windows. The most popular such applications is Stuffit. It can be found here: www.stuffit.com. Standard Edition 8.0 or newer is recommended. The installation file is quite big (8 Mb). Stuffit consists of the packer and extractor. The unpacker can be used for free for unlimited time.

"Stuffit standard" is rather a demanding so be sure to do all the steps exactly how it is written below.

  1. Run Stuffit Expander.
  2. Drag and drop your *.sit file into Stuffit. Or, go to the File-Open menu option to open the archive.
  3. Then, find and select only the icon siles in the archive, if not the software can abort during packing. specify all necessary items by holding … or ….. Then, in the main menu select Expand-Extract.
  4. In the "Extract Dialog" window that will open, press Browse and select where the files will be unpacked. Press OK. If you have done everything right, you will see the extracted files in the selected folder.
  5. If the extraction process finished successfully, close Stuffit. The unpacking is finished but there are other tasks to be done.

Converting to Windows icons

Now you will need one of the following applications: IconLover, ArtIcons Pro or IconXP. They can easily read MAC icons and convert them into Windows® graphics in no time.

You can process .icns and .rsrc icons the similar way you process images of other types: open them with the menu, drag and drop them into the program window, place to icon libraries.

Some Macintosh® icons have only 128x128 images. In this situation, you will need to do 16x16, 32x32 and 48x48 sizes. You can do it with ArtIcons, IconLover or IconXP and the Tools - New Image Format menu option.

Then, just delete unnecessary formats (for instance, monochrome) from the icons and you can save them as .ico icons!

unpacking icons from *.sit.hqx. files

To complete this task, you will use one other program - TurboZIP (5.0 or newer).

Open it. Then in the application toolbar press "Open" and choose *.hqx in the "file types" box. In the left window you will see the *.sit.hqx file and in the right window - just *.sit. Then just drag them using the coursor into any directory (for example, the desktop). After that, extract the *.sit archive as written above. The only fault of the program is that it is not really reliable.
