Transforming Mac Icons to Windows Icons

Some people think that there is much more professional 32-bit icons for MAC OS than for XP or Vista in the Internet. However Mac graphics may be simply converted into the *.ico files and applied for Windows. The detailed instructions on how to do this are given here.

Loading and extracting from the archive

Mac graphics in the Web are usually archived. Files can be of two types: with the *.sit extension and with the double extension *.sit.hqx. Uncommon type is *.sit.sitx, they should be handled in the similar way as *.sit.hqx. To unpack icons from the archive you will need a special software. Note that you require an application, which understands the MAC archives and works under Windows. The most common of such archiver is Stuffit. It can be found here: www.stuffit.com. Standard Edition 8.0 or more recent is suggested. The file for downloading is rather big (8 Mb). Stuffit consists of the packer and extractor. The extractor is available free of charge for unlimited time.

"Stuffit standard" is quite a demanding so be sure to do all the steps exactly how it is described below.

  1. Launch Stuffit Expander.
  2. Drag and drop your *.sit archive into Stuffit. Otherwise, use the File-Open menu item to open the file.
  3. Now, find and select only the icons themselves in the archive, if not the software can abort when process. Select all required items by holding … or ….. After that, in the main menu select Expand-Extract.
  4. In the "Extract Dialog" box that will open, press Browse and choose where the files will be extracted. Press OK. If you have done all the steps right, you will get the extracted files in the selected directory.
  5. If the extraction process completed successfully, close Stuffit. The extraction is completed but there are things to do.

Converting into Windows format

Now you require one of the listed applications: IconLover, ArtIcons Pro or IconXP. They can quickly read Macintosh® icons and turn them into Windows® icons in no time.

You can process .icns and .rsrc files the similar way you process pictures of other formats: open them using the menu, drag and drop them to the program window, place to icon libraries.

Some Mac icons have only 128x128 images. In this case, you will have to do 16x16, 32x32 and 48x48 subicons. You are able do it with ArtIcons, IconLover or IconXP and the Tools - New Image Format menu option.

Now, just delete unneeded formats (for instance, monochrome) from the pictures and save them as .ico files!

unpacking icons from *.sit.hqx. files

To solve this task, you will use one more application - TurboZIP (5.0 or newer).

Start it. Then in the program toolbar click "Open" and choose *.hqx in the "file types" box. In the left field you will see the *.sit.hqx file and in the right field - just *.sit. Then simply drag the files using the mouse into any directory (like the desktop). After that, extract the *.sit file as described earlier. The only disadvantage of the application is that it is not very reliable.
