Converting Mac Icons to Windows Icons

There is an opinion that there is much more quality 32-bit icons for MAC OS than for Windows in the Web. But Mac icons may be simply transformed into the *.ico files and used for Windows. The detailed directions on this task are below.

Downloading and unpacking from the archive

Mac icons in the Internet are usually archived. Files can be of two formats: with the *.sit extension and with two extensions *.sit.hqx. Uncommon version is *.sit.sitx, they should be handled in the same way as *.sit.hqx. To unpack icons from the archive you require an archiver. Note that you require an application, which reads the macintosh archives and works in Windows. The most popular such applications is Stuffit. It can be found here: www.stuffit.com. Standard Edition 8.0 or newer is suggested. The installation file is quite big (8 Mb). Stuffit contains the packer and extractor. The unpacker is available for free for unlimited time.

"Stuffit standard" is quite a demanding so be sure to do all the steps exactly how it is described below.

  1. Launch Stuffit Expander.
  2. Drag and drop your *.sit file into Stuffit. Otherwise, go to the File-Open menu item to open the archive.
  3. Now, find and choose only the icon siles in the archive, if not the application can abort during process. Select all necessary items by pressing … or ….. Then, in the main menu choose Expand-Extract.
  4. In the "Extract Dialog" box that will open, click Browse and select where the icons will be extracted. Press OK. If you have done everything right, you will see the unpacked files in the selected folder.
  5. If the extraction process finished correctly, close Stuffit. The unpacking is finished but there are other tasks to do.

Transforming into Windows icons

Now you will need one of the following applications: IconLover, ArtIcons Pro or IconXP. They can easily read MAC icons and convert them to Windows® graphics in no time.

You can work with .icns and .rsrc files the same way you work with images of other formats: open them using the menu, drag and drop them to the application window, add to icon libraries.

Some Macintosh® icons contains only 128x128 size. In this case, you will need to do 16x16, 32x32 and 48x48 sizes. You can do it using ArtIcons, IconLover or IconXP and the Tools - New Image Format menu option.

Now, just delete unnecessary options (for instance, monochrome) from the pictures and you can save them as .ico icons!

Extracting icons from *.sit.hqx. files

To complete this process, you will need one other program - TurboZIP (5.0 or newer).

Start it. Then in the program toolbar click "Open" and select *.hqx in the "file types" box. In the left window you will see the *.sit.hqx file and in the right window - just *.sit. Then simply drag them using the mouse into any folder (like the desktop). Then, unpack the *.sit archive as described earlier. The only fault of the application is that it is not really stable.
