Converting Mac Icons into Windows Format

Some people think that there is a lot more quality 32-bit icons for MAC OS than for XP or Vista in the Internet. However Mac icons may be simply transformed into the *.ico files and applied for Windows. The detailed directions on this task are given here.

Downloading and unpacking from the archive

Mac icons in the Web are usually archived. Files can be of two types: with the *.sit extension and with two extensions *.sit.hqx. A very rare type is *.sit.sitx, they should be handled in the similar way as *.sit.hqx. To extract files from the archive you require an archiver. Consider that you need an archiver, which reads the MAC archives and works in Windows. The most popular such archiver is Stuffit. It can be found here: www.stuffit.com. Standard Edition 8.0 or newer is recommended. The file for downloading is rather big (8 Mb). Stuffit consists of the packer and extractor. The extractor can be used for free for unlimited time.

"Stuffit standard" is rather a demanding so make sure to do all the steps just how it is written below.

  1. Run Stuffit Expander.
  2. Drag and drop your *.sit archive into Stuffit. Or, go to the File-Open menu item to open the file.
  3. Now, find and select only the icons themselves in the archive, otherwise the application will abort when packing. specify all required items by pressing … or ….. After that, in the main menu select Expand-Extract.
  4. In the "Extract Dialog" window that will appear, press Browse and select where the files will be unpacked. Press OK. When you have made everything correctly, you will see the extracted files in the selected directory.
  5. If the extraction process finished successfully, close Stuffit. The unpacking is finished but there are things to do.

Transforming into Windows format

Now you require one of the listed applications: IconLover, ArtIcons Pro or IconXP. They can quickly read Macintosh® icons and turn them to Windows® icons in no time.

You can process .icns and .rsrc files the similar way you process pictures of other types: open them using the menu, drag and drop them to the program window, place to icon libraries.

Some Mac icons have only 128x128 size. In this case, you will need to do 16x16, 32x32 and 48x48 sizes. You can do it using ArtIcons, IconLover or IconXP and the Tools - New Image Format menu option.

Then, just delete unneeded formats (for instance, monochrome) from the images and save them as .ico icons!

Extracting icons from *.sit.hqx. archives

To solve this task, you will require one other application - TurboZIP (5.0 or newer).

Start it. Then in the application toolbar click "Open" and choose *.hqx in the "file types" box. In the left box you will see the *.sit.hqx file and in the right box - simply *.sit. Now simply drag the files using the mouse into any folder (for example, the desktop). Then, unpack the *.sit file as written above. The only fault of the application is that it is not very stable.
