Transforming Mac Icons into Windows Icons

Some people think that there is much more quality 32-bit icons for MAC OS than for Windows in the Internet. But Mac icons can be simply converted into the *.ico files and used for Windows. The detailed directions on this task are below.

Loading and extracting from the archive

Mac graphics in the Internet are usually archived. Archives can be of two types: with the *.sit extension and with two extensions *.sit.hqx. Uncommon version is *.sit.sitx, they should be handled in the similar way as *.sit.hqx. To extract icons from the archive you require an archiver. Consider that you require an archiver, which understands the macintosh archives and works in Windows. The most common of such applications is Stuffit. It can be downloaded here: www.stuffit.com. Standard Edition 8.0 or more recent is recommended. The installation file is quite big (8 Mb). Stuffit consists of the packer and unpacker. The extractor is available free of charge for unlimited time.

"Stuffit standard" is rather a demanding so make sure to do everything exactly how it is written below.

  1. Launch Stuffit Expander.
  2. Drag and drop your *.sit file into Stuffit. Otherwise, go to the File-Open menu item to open the file.
  3. Now, find and choose just the icons themselves in the archive, otherwise the program will abort when process. Select all necessary items by pressing … or ….. After that, in the main menu select Expand-Extract.
  4. In the "Extract Dialog" window that will open, press Browse and select where the files will be extracted. Click OK. If you have made all the steps correctly, you will see the unpacked files in the specified folder.
  5. If the extraction process finished successfully, close Stuffit. The unpacking is finished but there are other tasks to be done.

Converting into Windows format

Now you will need one of the following programs: IconLover, ArtIcons Pro or IconXP. They can easily understand Macintosh® icons and convert them to Windows® graphics in no time.

You can process .icns and .rsrc icons the similar way you work with images of other formats: open them with the menu, drag and drop them into the program window, place to icon libraries.

Sometimes Mac icons have only 128x128 images. In this case, you will need to do 16x16, 32x32 and 48x48 subicons. You are able do it using ArtIcons, IconLover or IconXP and the Tools - New Image Format menu item.

Now, just delete unneeded options (for instance, monochrome) from the images and you can save them as .ico icons!

Extracting icons from *.sit.hqx. files

To complete this process, you will need one more application - TurboZIP (5.0 or newer).

Start it. Then in the program toolbar click "Open" and select *.hqx in the "file types" box. In the left box you will see the *.sit.hqx file and in the right box - just *.sit. Now simply drag the files using the coursor into any directory (for example, the desktop). Then, process the *.sit file as written earlier. The only fault of the application is that it is not very reliable.
