Converting Mac Icons to Windows Icons

Some people think that there is much more quality 32-bit icons for MAC OS than for XP or Vista in the Web. But Mac icons can be easily converted into the *.ico files and applied for Windows. The detailed directions on this task are below.

Loading and extracting from the archive

Mac icons in the Internet are usually archived. Archives can be of two types: with the *.sit extension and with two extensions *.sit.hqx. Uncommon version is *.sit.sitx, they have to be processed in the same way as *.sit.hqx. To unpack graphics from the archive you require a special software. Consider that you need an application, which reads the MAC archives and runs in Windows. The most popular such applications is Stuffit. It can be downloaded here: www.stuffit.com. Standard Edition 8.0 or more recent is recommended. The file for downloading is quite large (8 Mb). Stuffit contains the packer and extractor. The extractor can be used for free for unlimited time.

"Stuffit standard" is quite a capricious so be sure to do all the steps just how it is written below.

  1. Launch Stuffit Expander.
  2. Drag and drop your *.sit file into Stuffit. Otherwise, go to the File-Open menu item to open the file.
  3. Then, find and choose only the icon siles in the archive, otherwise the application can abort when packing. specify all necessary items by pressing … or ….. After that, in the main menu choose Expand-Extract.
  4. In the "Extract Dialog" box that will open, press Browse and choose where the icons will be unpacked. Click OK. If you have done all the steps right, you will see the extracted files in the specified directory.
  5. If the unpacking process completed correctly, close Stuffit. The extraction is done but there are things to do.

Converting into Windows format

Now you require one of the following applications: IconLover, ArtIcons Pro or IconXP. They can easily understand Macintosh® icons and transform them into Windows® graphics in no time.

You can process .icns and .rsrc icons the similar way you process images of other formats: open them using the menu, drag and drop them to the program window, place to icon libraries.

Some Macintosh® icons contains only 128x128 images. In this situation, you will need to do 16x16, 32x32 and 48x48 subicons. You can do it with ArtIcons, IconLover or IconXP and the Tools - New Image Format menu item.

Then, just delete unnecessary options (for example, monochrome) from the images and save them as .ico icons!

unpacking icons from *.sit.hqx. archives

To solve this task, you will use one other application - TurboZIP (5.0 or newer).

Run it. Then in the program toolbar press "Open" and choose *.hqx in the "file types" box. In the left box you will see the *.sit.hqx file and in the right window - just *.sit. Then just drag them using the mouse into any folder (like the desktop). After that, unpack the *.sit archive as written above. The only disadvantage of the program is that it is not very stable.
