Converting Mac Icons to Windows Format

Some people think that there is much more quality 32-bit icons for MAC OS than for XP or Vista in the Internet. But Mac graphics can be easily converted into the *.ico files and applied for Windows. The detailed directions on this task are given here.

Loading and unpacking from the archive

Mac graphics in the Internet are usually archived. Archives can be of different formats: with the *.sit extension and with two extensions *.sit.hqx. A very rare type is *.sit.sitx, they should be processed in the same way as *.sit.hqx. To unpack files from the archive you require a special software. Note that you require an archiver, which reads the macintosh archives and works under Windows. The most common of such applications is Stuffit. It can be downloaded here: www.stuffit.com. Standard Edition 8.0 or newer is suggested. The file for downloading is rather large (8 Mb). Stuffit contains the packer and extractor. The unpacker can be used free of charge for unlimited time.

"Stuffit standard" is rather a demanding so be sure to do everything just how it is written below.

  1. Run Stuffit Expander.
  2. Drag and drop your *.sit archive into Stuffit. Otherwise, use the File-Open menu option to choose the archive.
  3. Then, find and select only the icon siles in the archive, otherwise the software can abort when packing. specify all necessary items by holding … or ….. Then, in the main menu choose Expand-Extract.
  4. In the "Extract Dialog" box that will open, press Browse and select where the icons will be unpacked. Click OK. If you have made all the steps right, you will see the unpacked files in the selected directory.
  5. If the extraction process finished correctly, close Stuffit. The extraction is finished but there are other tasks to do.

Transforming to Windows icons

Now you require one of the following applications: IconLover, ArtIcons Pro or IconXP. They can quickly understand Macintosh® icons and convert them into Windows® icons in no time.

You can process .icns and .rsrc icons the same way you process images of other types: open them using the menu, drag and drop them to the application window, add to icon libraries.

Some Macintosh® icons contains only 128x128 size. In this situation, you will have to do 16x16, 32x32 and 48x48 sizes. You are able do it using ArtIcons, IconLover or IconXP and the Tools - New Image Format menu item.

Then, just delete unnecessary formats (for instance, monochrome) from the pictures and you can save them as .ico icons!

unpacking icons from *.sit.hqx. files

To complete this process, you will need one more program - TurboZIP (5.0 or newer).

Start it. Then in the application toolbar press "Open" and select *.hqx in the "file types" menu. In the left field you will see the *.sit.hqx file and in the right window - simply *.sit. Now just drag the files using the mouse into any folder (for example, the desktop). After that, extract the *.sit file as described above. The only fault of the application is that it is not really reliable.
