Transforming Mac Icons into Windows Format

Some people think that there is a lot more professional 32-bit icons for MAC OS than for Windows in the Web. But Mac graphics can be simply converted into the *.ico files and applied for Windows. The complete directions on this task are below.

Loading and unpacking from the archive

Mac graphics in the Internet are often archived. Archives can be of two formats: with the *.sit extension and with two extensions *.sit.hqx. A very rare version is *.sit.sitx, they have to be processed in the similar way as *.sit.hqx. To unpack icons from the archive you require an archiver. Note that you need an application, which knows the macintosh archives and works in Windows. The most popular such archiver is Stuffit. It can be found here: www.stuffit.com. Standard Edition 8.0 or more recent is suggested. The installation file is quite big (8 Mb). Stuffit consists of the packer and extractor. The extractor can be used free of charge for unlimited time.

"Stuffit standard" is quite a demanding so make sure to do everything just how it is written below.

  1. Start Stuffit Expander.
  2. Drag and drop your *.sit archive into Stuffit. Otherwise, use the File-Open menu option to open the file.
  3. Then, find and select only the icons themselves in the archive, otherwise the program will abort during packing. Choose all required items by holding … or ….. After that, in the main menu select Expand-Extract.
  4. In the "Extract Dialog" window that will appear, click Browse and choose where the icons will be extracted. Press OK. When you have done all the steps right, you will see the unpacked files in the specified folder.
  5. If the unpacking process finished correctly, close Stuffit. The extraction is finished but there are things to be done.

Converting into Windows icons

Now you will need one of the following applications: IconLover, ArtIcons Pro or IconXP. They can quickly read Macintosh® icons and convert them to Windows® icons in seconds.

You can work with .icns and .rsrc icons the similar way you process pictures of other formats: open them with the menu, drag and drop them into the program window, place to icon libraries.

Some Macintosh® icons have only 128x128 images. In this situation, you will have to do 16x16, 32x32 and 48x48 subicons. You can do it with ArtIcons, IconLover or IconXP and the Tools - New Image Format menu item.

Then, just delete unnecessary formats (for instance, monochrome) from the pictures and save them as .ico icons!

unpacking icons from *.sit.hqx. archives

To solve this process, you will require one more application - TurboZIP (5.0 or newer).

Start it. Then in the program toolbar click "Open" and choose *.hqx in the "file types" menu. In the left box you will see the *.sit.hqx file and in the right box - just *.sit. Now just drag the files using the coursor into any folder (like the desktop). Then, extract the *.sit archive as described above. The only fault of the application is that it is not very stable.
