Converting Mac Icons into Windows Icons

Some people think that there is a lot more quality 32-bit icons for MAC OS than for XP or Vista in the Internet. However Mac graphics may be simply transformed into the *.ico files and applied for Windows. The complete instructions on this task are given here.

Loading and unpacking from the archive

Mac graphics in the Internet are usually archived. Files can be of different formats: with the *.sit extension and with two extensions *.sit.hqx. A very rare type is *.sit.sitx, they have to be processed in the same way as *.sit.hqx. To extract icons from the archive you will need an archiver. Consider that you require an archiver, which understands the macintosh archives and works under Windows. The most common of such archiver is Stuffit. It can be downloaded here: www.stuffit.com. Standard Edition 8.0 or more recent is suggested. The installation file is quite big (8 Mb). Stuffit consists of the packer and unpacker. The extractor can be used free of charge for unlimited time.

"Stuffit standard" is rather a capricious so make sure to do everything just how it is described below.

  1. Launch Stuffit Expander.
  2. Drag and drop your *.sit archive into Stuffit. Otherwise, use the File-Open menu item to choose the archive.
  3. Then, find and choose just the icon siles in the archive, if not the software will abort when packing. specify all necessary items by pressing … or ….. Then, in the main menu select Expand-Extract.
  4. In the "Extract Dialog" window that will appear, click Browse and select where the files will be unpacked. Press OK. If you have made everything right, you will see the unpacked files in the selected folder.
  5. If the extraction process completed correctly, close Stuffit. The unpacking is completed but there are things to do.

Transforming to Windows icons

Now you require one of the following programs: IconLover, ArtIcons Pro or IconXP. They can quickly read Macintosh® icons and turn them into Windows® graphics in no time.

You can process .icns and .rsrc icons the similar way you work with pictures of other formats: open them using the menu, drag and drop them to the program window, place to icon libraries.

Some Macintosh® icons have only 128x128 images. In this situation, you will have to do 16x16, 32x32 and 48x48 subicons. You can do it with ArtIcons, IconLover or IconXP and the Tools - New Image Format menu item.

Now, just delete unnecessary formats (for instance, monochrome) from the images and save them as .ico files!

Extracting icons from *.sit.hqx. archives

To complete this process, you will use one more application - TurboZIP (5.0 or newer).

Open it. Then in the program toolbar click "Open" and select *.hqx in the "file types" menu. In the left field you will see the *.sit.hqx file and in the right field - simply *.sit. Now simply drag them using the mouse into any directory (for example, the desktop). After that, unpack the *.sit archive as written earlier. The only fault of the application is that it is not very stable.
