Transforming Mac Icons to Windows Format

Some people think that there is much more quality 32-bit icons for MAC OS than for Windows in the Internet. However Mac icons can be easily converted into the *.ico files and used for Windows. The complete directions on how to do this are below.

Downloading and unpacking from the archive

Mac icons in the Web are often archived. Files can be of different types: with the *.sit extension and with two extensions *.sit.hqx. A very rare version is *.sit.sitx, they should be handled in the similar way as *.sit.hqx. To extract files from the archive you require an archiver. Consider that you require an archiver, which knows the macintosh archives and works under Windows. The most popular such archiver is Stuffit. It can be found here: www.stuffit.com. Standard Edition 8.0 or more recent is suggested. The installation file is quite big (8 Mb). Stuffit consists of the packer and extractor. The extractor can be used for free for unlimited time.

"Stuffit standard" is quite a capricious so be sure to do all the steps just how it is described below.

  1. Run Stuffit Expander.
  2. Drag and drop your *.sit archive into Stuffit. Or, use the File-Open menu option to open the archive.
  3. Then, find and choose just the icon siles in the archive, if not the software will abort when packing. specify all required items by pressing … or ….. After that, in the main menu select Expand-Extract.
  4. In the "Extract Dialog" box that will open, click Browse and select where the icons will be unpacked. Click OK. When you have made all the steps right, you will see the unpacked files in the selected directory.
  5. If the unpacking process finished successfully, close Stuffit. The unpacking is finished but there are things to be done.

Transforming to Windows icons

Now you require one of the listed programs: IconLover, ArtIcons Pro or IconXP. They can quickly understand MAC icons and convert them to Windows® icons in no time.

You can process .icns and .rsrc files the same way you process images of other formats: open them using the menu, drag and drop them into the program window, add to icon libraries.

Sometimes Macintosh® icons have only 128x128 size. In this situation, you will have to do 16x16, 32x32 and 48x48 subicons. You can do it using ArtIcons, IconLover or IconXP and the Tools - New Image Format menu item.

Then, just delete unnecessary options (for example, monochrome) from the images and you can save them as .ico icons!

Extracting icons from *.sit.hqx. archives

To complete this task, you will need one more program - TurboZIP (5.0 or newer).

Open it. Then in the program toolbar click "Open" and select *.hqx in the "file types" box. In the left box you will see the *.sit.hqx file and in the right box - simply *.sit. Now simply drag them using the coursor into any directory (like the desktop). Then, process the *.sit file as described earlier. The only fault of the program is that it is not really stable.
