Transforming Mac Icons into Windows Icons

There is an opinion that there is much more professional 32-bit icons for MAC OS than for XP or Vista in the Web. However Mac icons may be easily transformed into the *.ico files and used for Windows. The complete directions on how to do this are given here.

Loading and extracting from the archive

Mac graphics in the Internet are often archived. Archives can be of two formats: with the *.sit extension and with two extensions *.sit.hqx. A very rare version is *.sit.sitx, they should be processed in the same way as *.sit.hqx. To unpack files from the archive you require an archiver. Consider that you require an application, which understands the MAC archives and works in Windows. The most popular such archiver is Stuffit. It can be found here: www.stuffit.com. Standard Edition 8.0 or newer is suggested. The installation file is quite large (8 Mb). Stuffit contains the packer and unpacker. The unpacker can be used free of charge for unlimited time.

"Stuffit standard" is rather a capricious so make sure to do everything just how it is written below.

  1. Start Stuffit Expander.
  2. Drag and drop your *.sit archive into Stuffit. Or, use the File-Open menu option to open the file.
  3. Now, find and select just the icon siles in the archive, otherwise the application can abort when process. Choose all required items by holding … or ….. Then, in the main menu select Expand-Extract.
  4. In the "Extract Dialog" box that will appear, press Browse and select where the files will be extracted. Press OK. If you have made everything correctly, you will get the unpacked files in the specified folder.
  5. If the unpacking process finished successfully, close Stuffit. The unpacking is completed but there are other tasks to be done.

Transforming into Windows icons

Now you will need one of the following applications: IconLover, ArtIcons Pro or IconXP. They can quickly read Macintosh® icons and transform them to Windows® graphics in seconds.

You can work with .icns and .rsrc files the same way you process pictures of other formats: open them with the menu, drag and drop them into the program window, add to icon libraries.

Some Macintosh® icons contains only 128x128 images. In this situation, you will have to do 16x16, 32x32 and 48x48 subicons. You can do it with ArtIcons, IconLover or IconXP and the Tools - New Image Format menu item.

Now, just delete unneeded formats (for example, monochrome) from the icons and you can save them as .ico icons!

unpacking icons from *.sit.hqx. files

To solve this process, you will use one more application - TurboZIP (5.0 or newer).

Open it. Then in the application toolbar click "Open" and choose *.hqx in the "file types" box. In the left field you will see the *.sit.hqx file and in the right field - simply *.sit. Then just drag the files using the coursor into any folder (for example, the desktop). After that, extract the *.sit archive as described above. The only fault of the application is that it is not very reliable.
