Transforming Mac Icons into Windows Icons

Some people think that there is much more quality 32-bit icons for MAC OS than for XP or Vista in the Internet. However Mac graphics may be simply transformed into the *.ico files and used for Windows. The complete instructions on this task are given here.

Downloading and unpacking from the archive

Mac icons in the Web are usually archived. Archives can be of different formats: with the *.sit extension and with two extensions *.sit.hqx. Uncommon type is *.sit.sitx, they should be handled in the same way as *.sit.hqx. To extract files from the archive you require an archiver. Consider that you require an archiver, which reads the macintosh archives and runs under Windows. The most popular such applications is Stuffit. It can be downloaded here: www.stuffit.com. Standard Edition 8.0 or newer is suggested. The file for downloading is quite large (8 Mb). Stuffit consists of the packer and unpacker. The unpacker can be used for free for unlimited time.

"Stuffit standard" is quite a capricious so be sure to do all the steps exactly how it is written below.

  1. Launch Stuffit Expander.
  2. Drag and drop your *.sit file into Stuffit. Or, go to the File-Open menu item to open the file.
  3. Then, find and choose only the icons themselves in the archive, otherwise the application will abort when packing. Choose all necessary items by holding … or ….. After that, in the main menu choose Expand-Extract.
  4. In the "Extract Dialog" window that will appear, click Browse and choose where the icons will be unpacked. Click OK. When you have done everything right, you will see the unpacked files in the specified folder.
  5. If the unpacking process completed successfully, close Stuffit. The extraction is completed but there are things to be done.

Converting into Windows format

Now you will need one of the following programs: IconLover, ArtIcons Pro or IconXP. They can easily understand MAC icons and turn them to Windows® icons in seconds.

You can work with .icns and .rsrc files the same way you process pictures of other formats: open them using the menu, drag and drop them to the application window, place to icon libraries.

Sometimes Mac icons contains only 128x128 images. In this case, you will have to do 16x16, 32x32 and 48x48 sizes. You are able do it using ArtIcons, IconLover or IconXP and the Tools - New Image Format menu item.

Then, just delete unnecessary formats (for example, monochrome) from the images and you can save them as .ico files!

unpacking icons from *.sit.hqx. archives

To solve this process, you will require one more application - TurboZIP (5.0 or newer).

Open it. Then in the application toolbar press "Open" and select *.hqx in the "file types" box. In the left field you will see the *.sit.hqx file and in the right window - just *.sit. Now simply drag the files using the coursor into any directory (for example, the desktop). Then, extract the *.sit archive as written above. The only fault of the program is that it is not very reliable.
