Transforming Mac Icons into Windows Format

There is an opinion that there is much more quality 32-bit icons for MAC OS than for Windows in the Web. However Mac icons can be simply transformed into the *.ico format and applied for Windows. The complete directions on how to do this are given here.

Downloading and unpacking from the archive

Mac icons in the Web are usually archived. Files can be of different formats: with the *.sit extension and with two extensions *.sit.hqx. A very rare version is *.sit.sitx, they should be handled in the similar way as *.sit.hqx. To extract files from the archive you require an archiver. Note that you require an archiver, which understands the MAC archives and works under Windows. The most popular such applications is Stuffit. It can be downloaded here: www.stuffit.com. Standard Edition 8.0 or more recent is suggested. The file for downloading is rather large (8 Mb). Stuffit contains the packer and extractor. The unpacker is available free of charge for unlimited time.

"Stuffit standard" is quite a demanding so be sure to do everything just how it is written below.

  1. Launch Stuffit Expander.
  2. Drag and drop your *.sit file into Stuffit. Or, go to the File-Open menu option to choose the archive.
  3. Now, find and select only the icons themselves in the archive, if not the software can abort when process. Select all necessary items by pressing … or ….. Then, in the main menu choose Expand-Extract.
  4. In the "Extract Dialog" box that will open, click Browse and select where the icons will be unpacked. Press OK. If you have done all the steps right, you will get the unpacked files in the selected folder.
  5. If the unpacking process finished successfully, close Stuffit. The extraction is done but there are things to be done.

Transforming to Windows icons

Now you require one of the listed programs: IconLover, ArtIcons Pro or IconXP. They can easily read MAC icons and transform them to Windows® icons in no time.

You can work with .icns and .rsrc files the similar way you work with pictures of other types: open them using the menu, drag and drop them into the program window, place to icon libraries.

Some Macintosh® icons have only 128x128 images. In this situation, you will have to do 16x16, 32x32 and 48x48 sizes. You are able do it with ArtIcons, IconLover or IconXP and the Tools - New Image Format menu item.

Then, just delete unneeded formats (for instance, monochrome) from the pictures and save them as .ico files!

Extracting icons from *.sit.hqx. files

To solve this task, you will require one other program - TurboZIP (5.0 or newer).

Run it. Then in the program toolbar press "Open" and choose *.hqx in the "file types" box. In the left window you will see the *.sit.hqx file and in the right box - just *.sit. Now simply drag the files using the coursor into any folder (for example, the desktop). After that, extract the *.sit archive as written above. The only fault of the application is that it is not very stable.
