Converting Mac Icons into Windows Format

Some people think that there is much more professional 32-bit icons for MAC OS than for Windows in the Internet. But Mac graphics may be simply converted into the *.ico format and applied for Windows. The detailed directions on this task are given here.

Loading and unpacking from the archive

Mac graphics in the Internet are often archived. Files can be of different types: with the *.sit extension and with two extensions *.sit.hqx. A very rare version is *.sit.sitx, they have to be handled in the same way as *.sit.hqx. To extract icons from the archive you will need a special software. Note that you require an application, which understands the MAC archives and runs in Windows. The most common of such archiver is Stuffit. It can be downloaded here: www.stuffit.com. Standard Edition 8.0 or more recent is suggested. The installation file is rather large (8 Mb). Stuffit consists of the packer and unpacker. The extractor can be used for free for unlimited time.

"Stuffit standard" is quite a demanding so be sure to do everything exactly how it is described below.

  1. Launch Stuffit Expander.
  2. Drag and drop your *.sit archive into Stuffit. Otherwise, go to the File-Open menu item to choose the archive.
  3. Then, find and select just the icons themselves in the archive, otherwise the program will abort during packing. Select all required items by holding … or ….. Then, in the main menu select Expand-Extract.
  4. In the "Extract Dialog" window that will open, click Browse and choose where the icons will be unpacked. Press OK. When you have done everything right, you will see the extracted files in the selected directory.
  5. If the extraction process finished correctly, close Stuffit. The extraction is finished but there are things to be done.

Converting to Windows icons

Now you will need one of the listed applications: IconLover, ArtIcons Pro or IconXP. They can easily understand Macintosh® icons and transform them to Windows® graphics in no time.

You can process .icns and .rsrc files the same way you work with images of other types: open them using the menu, drag and drop them to the application window, place to icon libraries.

Some Macintosh® icons contains only 128x128 size. In this situation, you will need to do 16x16, 32x32 and 48x48 sizes. You are able do it using ArtIcons, IconLover or IconXP and the Tools - New Image Format menu item.

Then, just delete unnecessary formats (for instance, monochrome) from the pictures and save them as .ico icons!

Extracting icons from *.sit.hqx. archives

To complete this process, you will need one other application - TurboZIP (5.0 or newer).

Start it. Then in the application toolbar press "Open" and choose *.hqx in the "file types" box. In the left window you will see the *.sit.hqx file and in the right box - simply *.sit. Now just drag the files using the mouse into any folder (for example, the desktop). Then, process the *.sit archive as described earlier. The only fault of the application is that it is not very stable.
