Transforming Mac Icons to Windows Format

Some people think that there is a lot more professional 32-bit icons for MAC OS than for XP or Vista in the Internet. However Mac icons can be easily transformed into the *.ico format and used for Windows. The detailed instructions on this task are below.

Downloading and extracting from the archive

Mac icons in the Web are often archived. Archives can be of two types: with the *.sit extension and with the double extension *.sit.hqx. Uncommon version is *.sit.sitx, they have to be handled in the same way as *.sit.hqx. To extract icons from the archive you require a special software. Note that you need an archiver, which reads the macintosh archives and runs under Windows. The most popular such applications is Stuffit. It can be found here: www.stuffit.com. Standard Edition 8.0 or more recent is recommended. The installation file is rather large (8 Mb). Stuffit contains the packer and extractor. The unpacker is available for free for unlimited time.

"Stuffit standard" is quite a demanding so be sure to do all the steps exactly how it is described below.

  1. Launch Stuffit Expander.
  2. Drag and drop your *.sit archive into Stuffit. Otherwise, use the File-Open menu option to open the archive.
  3. Then, find and select just the icons themselves in the archive, if not the program will abort during packing. specify all necessary items by pressing … or ….. After that, in the main menu choose Expand-Extract.
  4. In the "Extract Dialog" box that will appear, click Browse and select where the icons will be extracted. Click OK. If you have done everything correctly, you will get the extracted files in the selected directory.
  5. If the unpacking process completed successfully, close Stuffit. The extraction is finished but there are things to be done.

Converting to Windows format

Now you require one of the listed applications: IconLover, ArtIcons Pro or IconXP. They can easily read MAC icons and convert them to Windows® graphics in no time.

You can process .icns and .rsrc files the similar way you work with pictures of other formats: open them with the menu, drag and drop them into the program window, add to icon libraries.

Some Mac icons contains only 128x128 size. In this case, you will have to do 16x16, 32x32 and 48x48 subicons. You are able do it using ArtIcons, IconLover or IconXP and the Tools - New Image Format menu option.

Then, just delete unnecessary options (for example, monochrome) from the pictures and you can save them as .ico files!

Extracting icons from *.sit.hqx. archives

To complete this process, you will need one other application - TurboZIP (5.0 or newer).

Start it. Then in the application toolbar click "Open" and select *.hqx in the "file types" box. In the left window you will see the *.sit.hqx file and in the right field - simply *.sit. Now simply drag them using the mouse into any folder (like the desktop). After that, extract the *.sit file as described earlier. The only disadvantage of the application is that it is not very stable.
