Transforming Mac Icons to Windows Icons

There is an opinion that there is a lot more professional 32-bit icons for MAC OS than for Windows in the Internet. But Mac icons may be simply converted into the *.ico files and used for Windows. The complete directions on this task are below.

Loading and unpacking from the archive

Mac graphics in the Web are usually archived. Archives can be of different types: with the *.sit extension and with the double extension *.sit.hqx. Uncommon type is *.sit.sitx, they should be processed in the similar way as *.sit.hqx. To unpack files from the archive you require an archiver. Note that you need an archiver, which reads the MAC archives and runs under Windows. The most popular such applications is Stuffit. It can be found here: www.stuffit.com. Standard Edition 8.0 or more recent is recommended. The file for downloading is rather big (8 Mb). Stuffit contains the packer and extractor. The extractor can be used for free for unlimited time.

"Stuffit standard" is quite a demanding so be sure to do everything exactly how it is described below.

  1. Run Stuffit Expander.
  2. Drag and drop your *.sit archive into Stuffit. Or, go to the File-Open menu option to choose the file.
  3. Now, find and select only the icons themselves in the archive, if not the software will abort when packing. specify all required items by holding … or ….. Then, in the main menu choose Expand-Extract.
  4. In the "Extract Dialog" box that will open, press Browse and select where the files will be extracted. Click OK. If you have done all the steps right, you will get the extracted files in the selected folder.
  5. If the unpacking process completed correctly, close Stuffit. The extraction is finished but there are other tasks to be done.

Converting to Windows format

Now you require one of the following applications: IconLover, ArtIcons Pro or IconXP. They can easily understand Macintosh® icons and convert them into Windows® graphics in seconds.

You can process .icns and .rsrc icons the similar way you work with pictures of other formats: open them using the menu, drag and drop them to the application window, add to icon libraries.

Some Macintosh® icons contains only 128x128 images. In this situation, you will need to do 16x16, 32x32 and 48x48 sizes. You are able do it with ArtIcons, IconLover or IconXP and the Tools - New Image Format menu option.

Now, just delete unneeded formats (for example, monochrome) from the icons and save them as .ico files!

Extracting icons from *.sit.hqx. archives

To solve this process, you will need one more program - TurboZIP (5.0 or newer).

Run it. Then in the program toolbar press "Open" and choose *.hqx in the "file types" menu. In the left window you will see the *.sit.hqx file and in the right field - just *.sit. Now just drag them using the mouse into any folder (like the desktop). After that, process the *.sit archive as written earlier. The only disadvantage of the program is that it is not really reliable.
