Transforming Mac Icons into Windows Format

There is an opinion that there is much more quality 32-bit icons for MAC OS than for XP or Vista in the Web. But Mac icons can be simply converted into the *.ico files and applied for Windows. The complete instructions on how to do this are below.

Downloading and unpacking from the archive

Mac icons in the Web are often archived. Archives can be of two types: with the *.sit extension and with the double extension *.sit.hqx. Uncommon type is *.sit.sitx, they should be processed in the same way as *.sit.hqx. To unpack icons from the archive you require a special software. Note that you require an archiver, which knows the macintosh archives and runs in Windows. The most popular such archiver is Stuffit. It can be downloaded here: www.stuffit.com. Standard Edition 8.0 or more recent is recommended. The installation file is rather big (8 Mb). Stuffit consists of the packer and unpacker. The unpacker is available free of charge for unlimited time.

"Stuffit standard" is quite a capricious so make sure to do all the steps just how it is written below.

  1. Run Stuffit Expander.
  2. Drag and drop your *.sit archive into Stuffit. Or, go to the File-Open menu option to choose the archive.
  3. Then, find and choose just the icon siles in the archive, if not the program can abort when process. Select all necessary items by pressing … or ….. After that, in the main menu choose Expand-Extract.
  4. In the "Extract Dialog" window that will appear, click Browse and select where the files will be unpacked. Press OK. If you have made all the steps correctly, you will get the extracted files in the specified directory.
  5. If the extraction process finished correctly, close Stuffit. The extraction is done but there are things to be done.

Converting to Windows format

Now you require one of the following applications: IconLover, ArtIcons Pro or IconXP. They can easily understand MAC icons and convert them to Windows® icons in no time.

You can process .icns and .rsrc icons the similar way you process pictures of other formats: open them with the menu, drag and drop them to the application window, add to icon libraries.

Sometimes Macintosh® icons have only 128x128 images. In this case, you will have to do 16x16, 32x32 and 48x48 subicons. You are able do it with ArtIcons, IconLover or IconXP and the Tools - New Image Format menu option.

Then, just delete unnecessary formats (for example, monochrome) from the pictures and you can save them as .ico files!

Extracting icons from *.sit.hqx. archives

To complete this process, you will need one more application - TurboZIP (5.0 or newer).

Start it. Then in the application toolbar click "Open" and select *.hqx in the "file types" menu. In the left box you will see the *.sit.hqx file and in the right window - simply *.sit. Then simply drag them using the mouse into any folder (like the desktop). After that, extract the *.sit file as described earlier. The only fault of the program is that it is not very stable.
