Converting Mac Icons to Windows Icons

There is an opinion that there is a lot more quality 32-bit icons for MAC OS than for XP or Vista in the Internet. But Mac graphics can be simply transformed into the *.ico format and used for Windows. The complete directions on how to do this are given here.

Downloading and extracting from the archive

Mac graphics in the Web are usually archived. Files can be of two types: with the *.sit extension and with two extensions *.sit.hqx. A very rare version is *.sit.sitx, they have to be handled in the similar way as *.sit.hqx. To extract files from the archive you will need an archiver. Note that you need an application, which understands the macintosh archives and works in Windows. The most common of such archiver is Stuffit. It can be found here: www.stuffit.com. Standard Edition 8.0 or newer is suggested. The file for downloading is rather big (8 Mb). Stuffit contains the packer and unpacker. The unpacker is available for free for unlimited time.

"Stuffit standard" is quite a demanding so make sure to do all the steps just how it is described below.

  1. Start Stuffit Expander.
  2. Drag and drop your *.sit archive into Stuffit. Otherwise, go to the File-Open menu item to choose the archive.
  3. Then, find and select just the icons themselves in the archive, otherwise the software will abort when process. specify all necessary items by holding … or ….. Then, in the main menu select Expand-Extract.
  4. In the "Extract Dialog" window that will open, click Browse and choose where the icons will be extracted. Click OK. If you have done everything right, you will see the unpacked files in the selected directory.
  5. If the extraction process completed correctly, close Stuffit. The unpacking is completed but there are other tasks to be done.

Converting to Windows format

Now you require one of the following programs: IconLover, ArtIcons Pro or IconXP. They can quickly read Macintosh® icons and transform them into Windows® graphics in seconds.

You can process .icns and .rsrc icons the similar way you process images of other types: open them using the menu, drag and drop them to the application window, add to icon libraries.

Some Mac icons have only 128x128 images. In this situation, you will need to do 16x16, 32x32 and 48x48 subicons. You can do it using ArtIcons, IconLover or IconXP and the Tools - New Image Format menu item.

Then, just delete unnecessary options (for example, monochrome) from the pictures and you can save them as .ico icons!

unpacking icons from *.sit.hqx. archives

To complete this task, you will use one other application - TurboZIP (5.0 or newer).

Start it. Then in the application toolbar press "Open" and select *.hqx in the "file types" box. In the left box you will see the *.sit.hqx file and in the right window - just *.sit. Now just drag the files using the coursor into any directory (for example, the desktop). After that, unpack the *.sit file as written above. The only fault of the program is that it is not really stable.
