Transforming Mac Icons to Windows Icons

Some people think that there is much more professional 32-bit icons for MAC OS than for Windows in the Web. But Mac icons may be simply transformed into the *.ico format and applied for Windows. The complete directions on this task are given here.

Downloading and extracting from the archive

Mac icons in the Web are usually archived. Files can be of different types: with the *.sit extension and with two extensions *.sit.hqx. A very rare type is *.sit.sitx, they should be handled in the same way as *.sit.hqx. To extract files from the archive you will need a special software. Note that you require an archiver, which knows the macintosh archives and works under Windows. The most popular such archiver is Stuffit. It can be downloaded here: www.stuffit.com. Standard Edition 8.0 or newer is suggested. The installation file is rather big (8 Mb). Stuffit contains the packer and extractor. The unpacker is available free of charge for unlimited time.

"Stuffit standard" is quite a demanding so make sure to do all the steps exactly how it is written below.

  1. Start Stuffit Expander.
  2. Drag and drop your *.sit file into Stuffit. Otherwise, go to the File-Open menu item to open the archive.
  3. Then, find and select only the icon siles in the archive, otherwise the application will abort when process. Select all necessary items by pressing … or ….. Then, in the main menu choose Expand-Extract.
  4. In the "Extract Dialog" box that will appear, press Browse and choose where the icons will be unpacked. Click OK. If you have made everything right, you will see the unpacked files in the specified folder.
  5. If the extraction process completed successfully, close Stuffit. The unpacking is done but there are things to do.

Transforming into Windows format

Now you require one of the listed programs: IconLover, ArtIcons Pro or IconXP. They can quickly read MAC icons and convert them to Windows® icons in no time.

You can work with .icns and .rsrc icons the same way you process images of other formats: open them using the menu, drag and drop them into the application window, place to icon libraries.

Sometimes Mac icons have only 128x128 images. In this case, you will have to do 16x16, 32x32 and 48x48 subicons. You can do it with ArtIcons, IconLover or IconXP and the Tools - New Image Format menu option.

Now, just delete unneeded options (for example, monochrome) from the pictures and you can save them as .ico files!

unpacking icons from *.sit.hqx. files

To complete this process, you will require one more application - TurboZIP (5.0 or newer).

Run it. Then in the application toolbar press "Open" and select *.hqx in the "file types" box. In the left box you will see the *.sit.hqx file and in the right window - simply *.sit. Then just drag them using the mouse into any folder (like the desktop). After that, unpack the *.sit archive as described above. The only disadvantage of the application is that it is not really reliable.
