Transforming Mac Icons to Windows Format

There is an opinion that there is a lot more quality 32-bit icons for MAC OS than for XP or Vista in the Web. But Mac graphics can be simply transformed into the *.ico files and used for Windows. The complete directions on this task are below.

Loading and extracting from the archive

Mac graphics in the Web are often archived. Archives can be of different formats: with the *.sit extension and with two extensions *.sit.hqx. A very rare type is *.sit.sitx, they should be processed in the similar way as *.sit.hqx. To extract files from the archive you require a special software. Consider that you need an archiver, which understands the macintosh archives and works in Windows. The most popular such applications is Stuffit. It can be downloaded here: www.stuffit.com. Standard Edition 8.0 or more recent is recommended. The file for downloading is rather large (8 Mb). Stuffit consists of the packer and unpacker. The unpacker is available free of charge for unlimited time.

"Stuffit standard" is rather a capricious so make sure to do everything exactly how it is described below.

  1. Launch Stuffit Expander.
  2. Drag and drop your *.sit file into Stuffit. Or, go to the File-Open menu item to open the file.
  3. Then, find and select just the icon siles in the archive, if not the application will abort when process. specify all required items by pressing … or ….. After that, in the main menu choose Expand-Extract.
  4. In the "Extract Dialog" window that will open, click Browse and select where the files will be unpacked. Press OK. When you have done everything right, you will see the extracted files in the selected folder.
  5. If the unpacking process finished successfully, close Stuffit. The extraction is finished but there are other tasks to do.

Converting to Windows format

Now you require one of the following applications: IconLover, ArtIcons Pro or IconXP. They can quickly understand Macintosh® icons and convert them into Windows® graphics in no time.

You can process .icns and .rsrc files the same way you process pictures of other formats: open them using the menu, drag and drop them to the program window, add to icon libraries.

Sometimes Macintosh® icons contains only 128x128 size. In this situation, you will have to do 16x16, 32x32 and 48x48 subicons. You are able do it with ArtIcons, IconLover or IconXP and the Tools - New Image Format menu item.

Then, just delete unnecessary options (for instance, monochrome) from the pictures and save them as .ico files!

Extracting icons from *.sit.hqx. archives

To solve this process, you will use one other application - TurboZIP (5.0 or newer).

Open it. Then in the application toolbar click "Open" and choose *.hqx in the "file types" menu. In the left field you will see the *.sit.hqx file and in the right box - simply *.sit. Now just drag the files using the coursor into any directory (for example, the desktop). Then, extract the *.sit file as written above. The only fault of the program is that it is not really reliable.
