Converting Mac Icons to Windows Icons

Some people think that there is a lot more professional 32-bit icons for MAC OS than for Windows in the Web. But Mac icons may be easily transformed into the *.ico files and applied for Windows. The complete directions on how to do this are given here.

Loading and unpacking from the archive

Mac icons in the Internet are usually archived. Files can be of two types: with the *.sit extension and with two extensions *.sit.hqx. Uncommon version is *.sit.sitx, they have to be processed in the same way as *.sit.hqx. To extract graphics from the archive you will need a special software. Consider that you need an application, which understands the macintosh archives and runs in Windows. The most popular such archiver is Stuffit. It can be found here: www.stuffit.com. Standard Edition 8.0 or more recent is suggested. The file for downloading is rather large (8 Mb). Stuffit consists of the packer and extractor. The extractor can be used for free for unlimited time.

"Stuffit standard" is rather a capricious so make sure to do all the steps just how it is written below.

  1. Start Stuffit Expander.
  2. Drag and drop your *.sit file into Stuffit. Or, use the File-Open menu option to choose the file.
  3. Now, find and select just the icon siles in the archive, if not the application will abort during packing. specify all necessary items by pressing … or ….. After that, in the main menu choose Expand-Extract.
  4. In the "Extract Dialog" box that will appear, click Browse and choose where the files will be unpacked. Press OK. When you have made everything right, you will get the extracted files in the specified directory.
  5. If the unpacking process completed correctly, close Stuffit. The unpacking is done but there are things to do.

Converting into Windows icons

Now you require one of the following programs: IconLover, ArtIcons Pro or IconXP. They can quickly read Macintosh® icons and turn them into Windows® graphics in seconds.

You can work with .icns and .rsrc icons the similar way you process images of other types: open them using the menu, drag and drop them into the application window, place to icon libraries.

Sometimes Macintosh® icons contains only 128x128 images. In this situation, you will need to do 16x16, 32x32 and 48x48 sizes. You are able do it using ArtIcons, IconLover or IconXP and the Tools - New Image Format menu option.

Then, just delete unneeded formats (for instance, monochrome) from the icons and save them as .ico files!

Extracting icons from *.sit.hqx. files

To complete this process, you will need one other application - TurboZIP (5.0 or newer).

Run it. Then in the program toolbar press "Open" and choose *.hqx in the "file types" box. In the left window you will see the *.sit.hqx file and in the right window - simply *.sit. Then just drag the files using the mouse into any folder (like the desktop). Then, unpack the *.sit file as written earlier. The only fault of the application is that it is not really stable.
