Transforming Mac Icons to Windows Icons

There is an opinion that there is a lot more professional 32-bit icons for MAC OS than for XP or Vista in the Web. However Mac icons may be easily transformed into the *.ico files and applied for Windows. The complete instructions on how to do this are given here.

Loading and unpacking from the archive

Mac graphics in the Internet are usually archived. Files can be of different types: with the *.sit extension and with two extensions *.sit.hqx. Uncommon type is *.sit.sitx, they have to be processed in the similar way as *.sit.hqx. To extract files from the archive you require an archiver. Note that you require an archiver, which knows the MAC archives and runs under Windows. The most popular such applications is Stuffit. It can be found here: www.stuffit.com. Standard Edition 8.0 or newer is recommended. The installation file is rather large (8 Mb). Stuffit consists of the packer and unpacker. The unpacker can be used free of charge for unlimited time.

"Stuffit standard" is quite a demanding so make sure to do all the steps just how it is written below.

  1. Run Stuffit Expander.
  2. Drag and drop your *.sit file into Stuffit. Otherwise, use the File-Open menu item to choose the file.
  3. Then, find and choose just the icons themselves in the archive, otherwise the software will abort when process. Select all required items by holding … or ….. After that, in the main menu select Expand-Extract.
  4. In the "Extract Dialog" box that will appear, press Browse and select where the files will be unpacked. Press OK. When you have done all the steps correctly, you will get the unpacked files in the specified directory.
  5. If the extraction process finished correctly, close Stuffit. The extraction is finished but there are other tasks to do.

Transforming into Windows format

Now you require one of the following programs: IconLover, ArtIcons Pro or IconXP. They can easily read MAC icons and turn them into Windows® icons in no time.

You can process .icns and .rsrc icons the same way you process images of other formats: open them with the menu, drag and drop them to the program window, add to icon libraries.

Some Macintosh® icons have only 128x128 images. In this case, you will have to do 16x16, 32x32 and 48x48 sizes. You can do it with ArtIcons, IconLover or IconXP and the Tools - New Image Format menu item.

Now, just delete unnecessary options (for example, monochrome) from the icons and you can save them as .ico files!

Extracting icons from *.sit.hqx. files

To solve this process, you will require one other application - TurboZIP (5.0 or newer).

Run it. Then in the program toolbar click "Open" and select *.hqx in the "file types" menu. In the left box you will see the *.sit.hqx file and in the right box - simply *.sit. Then just drag the files using the coursor into any folder (like the desktop). Then, unpack the *.sit archive as described above. The only disadvantage of the application is that it is not very reliable.
