Converting Mac Icons to Windows Format

There is an opinion that there is much more quality 32-bit icons for MAC OS than for XP or Vista in the Web. But Mac graphics can be simply converted into the *.ico format and applied for Windows. The complete instructions on this task are below.

Loading and extracting from the archive

Mac graphics in the Web are usually archived. Files can be of different formats: with the *.sit extension and with the double extension *.sit.hqx. A very rare type is *.sit.sitx, they have to be handled in the similar way as *.sit.hqx. To extract graphics from the archive you require a special software. Consider that you require an archiver, which knows the macintosh archives and works in Windows. The most popular such archiver is Stuffit. It can be found here: www.stuffit.com. Standard Edition 8.0 or newer is recommended. The installation file is quite large (8 Mb). Stuffit contains the packer and extractor. The extractor is available free of charge for unlimited time.

"Stuffit standard" is rather a capricious so make sure to do all the steps just how it is written below.

  1. Launch Stuffit Expander.
  2. Drag and drop your *.sit archive into Stuffit. Otherwise, use the File-Open menu item to open the archive.
  3. Then, find and select just the icon siles in the archive, if not the program can abort when packing. Select all necessary items by pressing … or ….. After that, in the main menu select Expand-Extract.
  4. In the "Extract Dialog" box that will open, press Browse and select where the icons will be unpacked. Press OK. If you have made all the steps right, you will get the unpacked files in the specified folder.
  5. If the extraction process finished successfully, close Stuffit. The extraction is finished but there are things to do.

Transforming to Windows icons

Now you require one of the following applications: IconLover, ArtIcons Pro or IconXP. They can easily understand MAC icons and transform them to Windows® icons in no time.

You can work with .icns and .rsrc icons the similar way you process images of other formats: open them with the menu, drag and drop them into the application window, add to icon libraries.

Sometimes Mac icons have only 128x128 images. In this case, you will need to do 16x16, 32x32 and 48x48 subicons. You are able do it with ArtIcons, IconLover or IconXP and the Tools - New Image Format menu option.

Then, just delete unnecessary options (for instance, monochrome) from the images and you can save them as .ico icons!

unpacking icons from *.sit.hqx. archives

To solve this process, you will need one other program - TurboZIP (5.0 or newer).

Start it. Then in the program toolbar press "Open" and choose *.hqx in the "file types" menu. In the left box you will see the *.sit.hqx file and in the right field - just *.sit. Then simply drag them using the mouse into any directory (like the desktop). After that, unpack the *.sit archive as written earlier. The only disadvantage of the application is that it is not very stable.
