Converting Mac Icons to Windows Format

There is an opinion that there is much more professional 32-bit icons for MAC OS than for XP or Vista in the Web. But Mac icons may be simply converted into the *.ico format and used for Windows. The detailed directions on this task are below.

Loading and unpacking from the archive

Mac icons in the Web are usually archived. Archives can be of different formats: with the *.sit extension and with the double extension *.sit.hqx. Uncommon type is *.sit.sitx, they have to be processed in the same way as *.sit.hqx. To unpack graphics from the archive you require a special software. Note that you need an application, which knows the MAC archives and works in Windows. The most common of such applications is Stuffit. It can be downloaded here: www.stuffit.com. Standard Edition 8.0 or more recent is suggested. The installation file is rather large (8 Mb). Stuffit consists of the packer and unpacker. The unpacker is available free of charge for unlimited time.

"Stuffit standard" is quite a capricious so make sure to do everything exactly how it is described below.

  1. Launch Stuffit Expander.
  2. Drag and drop your *.sit archive into Stuffit. Or, go to the File-Open menu item to choose the archive.
  3. Now, find and choose just the icons themselves in the archive, otherwise the software will abort when process. Select all necessary items by pressing … or ….. After that, in the main menu choose Expand-Extract.
  4. In the "Extract Dialog" box that will open, click Browse and choose where the icons will be unpacked. Click OK. If you have made everything correctly, you will get the extracted files in the specified folder.
  5. If the unpacking process finished successfully, close Stuffit. The extraction is finished but there are things to do.

Transforming into Windows icons

Now you require one of the listed programs: IconLover, ArtIcons Pro or IconXP. They can easily read Macintosh® icons and turn them into Windows® graphics in seconds.

You can work with .icns and .rsrc icons the same way you process pictures of other formats: open them using the menu, drag and drop them into the application window, place to icon libraries.

Some Macintosh® icons contains only 128x128 images. In this case, you will need to do 16x16, 32x32 and 48x48 sizes. You are able do it using ArtIcons, IconLover or IconXP and the Tools - New Image Format menu item.

Then, just delete unneeded formats (for instance, monochrome) from the pictures and save them as .ico icons!

unpacking icons from *.sit.hqx. archives

To solve this process, you will use one other application - TurboZIP (5.0 or newer).

Open it. Then in the program toolbar click "Open" and choose *.hqx in the "file types" box. In the left field you will see the *.sit.hqx file and in the right field - simply *.sit. Now simply drag the files using the mouse into any directory (for example, the desktop). Then, extract the *.sit file as described above. The only disadvantage of the application is that it is not really reliable.
