Converting Mac Icons to Windows Format

There is an opinion that there is a lot more quality 32-bit icons for MAC OS than for XP or Vista in the Internet. However Mac icons may be simply converted into the *.ico files and used for Windows. The detailed instructions on this task are below.

Downloading and unpacking from the archive

Mac graphics in the Internet are usually archived. Archives can be of two types: with the *.sit extension and with the double extension *.sit.hqx. Uncommon type is *.sit.sitx, they have to be processed in the same way as *.sit.hqx. To unpack graphics from the archive you will need a special software. Note that you need an archiver, which knows the macintosh archives and works in Windows. The most popular such applications is Stuffit. It can be downloaded here: www.stuffit.com. Standard Edition 8.0 or newer is recommended. The installation file is quite large (8 Mb). Stuffit contains the packer and unpacker. The unpacker is available for free for unlimited time.

"Stuffit standard" is rather a demanding so make sure to do everything just how it is written below.

  1. Run Stuffit Expander.
  2. Drag and drop your *.sit file into Stuffit. Or, go to the File-Open menu item to open the file.
  3. Now, find and select only the icons themselves in the archive, if not the software will abort when process. Choose all necessary items by pressing … or ….. After that, in the main menu select Expand-Extract.
  4. In the "Extract Dialog" window that will open, press Browse and choose where the icons will be unpacked. Click OK. When you have done everything right, you will get the extracted files in the specified directory.
  5. If the unpacking process completed successfully, close Stuffit. The unpacking is completed but there are things to be done.

Transforming into Windows format

Now you will need one of the listed applications: IconLover, ArtIcons Pro or IconXP. They can quickly understand MAC icons and transform them into Windows® graphics in no time.

You can process .icns and .rsrc files the similar way you process images of other types: open them using the menu, drag and drop them to the application window, add to icon libraries.

Sometimes Macintosh® icons have only 128x128 images. In this case, you will have to do 16x16, 32x32 and 48x48 sizes. You are able do it with ArtIcons, IconLover or IconXP and the Tools - New Image Format menu option.

Now, just delete unneeded options (for instance, monochrome) from the icons and save them as .ico icons!

Extracting icons from *.sit.hqx. archives

To complete this process, you will require one other program - TurboZIP (5.0 or newer).

Start it. Then in the application toolbar click "Open" and select *.hqx in the "file types" box. In the left box you will see the *.sit.hqx file and in the right window - just *.sit. Then just drag them using the coursor into any directory (for example, the desktop). Then, unpack the *.sit archive as described above. The only disadvantage of the application is that it is not really reliable.
