Transforming Mac Icons into Windows Icons

There is an opinion that there is a lot more professional 32-bit icons for MAC OS than for XP or Vista in the Internet. But Mac graphics may be simply converted into the *.ico format and used for Windows. The complete instructions on this task are given here.

Loading and unpacking from the archive

Mac graphics in the Internet are usually archived. Archives can be of two types: with the *.sit extension and with two extensions *.sit.hqx. A very rare version is *.sit.sitx, they should be processed in the similar way as *.sit.hqx. To unpack graphics from the archive you require an archiver. Note that you require an application, which reads the MAC archives and runs under Windows. The most common of such applications is Stuffit. It can be downloaded here: www.stuffit.com. Standard Edition 8.0 or newer is recommended. The file for downloading is quite large (8 Mb). Stuffit contains the packer and extractor. The extractor can be used free of charge for unlimited time.

"Stuffit standard" is quite a demanding so make sure to do all the steps just how it is described below.

  1. Start Stuffit Expander.
  2. Drag and drop your *.sit archive into Stuffit. Otherwise, go to the File-Open menu item to open the archive.
  3. Then, find and choose just the icon siles in the archive, if not the software can abort during packing. specify all necessary items by holding … or ….. Then, in the main menu choose Expand-Extract.
  4. In the "Extract Dialog" box that will appear, click Browse and select where the icons will be extracted. Click OK. If you have made all the steps right, you will see the unpacked files in the specified directory.
  5. If the extraction process completed correctly, close Stuffit. The extraction is done but there are other tasks to do.

Converting into Windows format

Now you require one of the following programs: IconLover, ArtIcons Pro or IconXP. They can easily understand Macintosh® icons and turn them to Windows® graphics in seconds.

You can work with .icns and .rsrc files the similar way you work with pictures of other formats: open them using the menu, drag and drop them to the application window, place to icon libraries.

Sometimes Macintosh® icons contains only 128x128 size. In this situation, you will have to do 16x16, 32x32 and 48x48 subicons. You are able do it using ArtIcons, IconLover or IconXP and the Tools - New Image Format menu option.

Then, just delete unneeded options (for example, monochrome) from the images and save them as .ico files!

Extracting icons from *.sit.hqx. archives

To complete this process, you will require one other program - TurboZIP (5.0 or newer).

Open it. Then in the application toolbar click "Open" and choose *.hqx in the "file types" menu. In the left box you will see the *.sit.hqx file and in the right window - simply *.sit. Now simply drag them using the coursor into any directory (for example, the desktop). Then, process the *.sit archive as written earlier. The only disadvantage of the application is that it is not very stable.
