Converting Mac Icons into Windows Format

Some people think that there is a lot more quality 32-bit icons for MAC OS than for Windows in the Internet. But Mac icons can be easily transformed into the *.ico format and applied for Windows. The complete instructions on how to do this are given here.

Loading and unpacking from the archive

Mac graphics in the Web are usually archived. Archives can be of two formats: with the *.sit extension and with the double extension *.sit.hqx. A very rare type is *.sit.sitx, they should be processed in the same way as *.sit.hqx. To unpack graphics from the archive you require an archiver. Note that you need an application, which reads the macintosh archives and runs under Windows. The most common of such archiver is Stuffit. It can be downloaded here: www.stuffit.com. Standard Edition 8.0 or more recent is recommended. The installation file is rather big (8 Mb). Stuffit contains the packer and unpacker. The extractor can be used free of charge for unlimited time.

"Stuffit standard" is rather a demanding so make sure to do everything exactly how it is written below.

  1. Run Stuffit Expander.
  2. Drag and drop your *.sit file into Stuffit. Otherwise, go to the File-Open menu item to open the file.
  3. Then, find and choose just the icon siles in the archive, if not the application can abort during packing. specify all necessary items by pressing … or ….. After that, in the main menu choose Expand-Extract.
  4. In the "Extract Dialog" window that will open, click Browse and select where the files will be extracted. Press OK. When you have made everything right, you will get the unpacked files in the specified folder.
  5. If the unpacking process completed correctly, close Stuffit. The unpacking is done but there are things to be done.

Transforming to Windows format

Now you require one of the listed programs: IconLover, ArtIcons Pro or IconXP. They can easily understand Macintosh® icons and turn them into Windows® graphics in seconds.

You can process .icns and .rsrc files the similar way you work with pictures of other types: open them with the menu, drag and drop them into the program window, place to icon libraries.

Some Macintosh® icons have only 128x128 images. In this case, you will need to do 16x16, 32x32 and 48x48 sizes. You can do it with ArtIcons, IconLover or IconXP and the Tools - New Image Format menu item.

Then, just delete unneeded options (for instance, monochrome) from the images and you can save them as .ico files!

Extracting icons from *.sit.hqx. archives

To complete this task, you will need one more program - TurboZIP (5.0 or newer).

Run it. Then in the application toolbar click "Open" and select *.hqx in the "file types" box. In the left field you will see the *.sit.hqx file and in the right window - just *.sit. Now just drag them using the coursor into any folder (like the desktop). Then, process the *.sit archive as described earlier. The only disadvantage of the program is that it is not very reliable.
