Transforming Mac Icons into Windows Format

Some people think that there is a lot more quality 32-bit icons for MAC OS than for XP or Vista in the Internet. But Mac icons may be easily transformed into the *.ico format and used for Windows. The complete instructions on how to do this are given here.

Downloading and extracting from the archive

Mac graphics in the Web are often archived. Files can be of different formats: with the *.sit extension and with the double extension *.sit.hqx. Uncommon type is *.sit.sitx, they should be handled in the same way as *.sit.hqx. To unpack graphics from the archive you require an archiver. Consider that you require an application, which understands the MAC archives and runs in Windows. The most popular such applications is Stuffit. It can be found here: www.stuffit.com. Standard Edition 8.0 or newer is suggested. The file for downloading is quite big (8 Mb). Stuffit consists of the packer and unpacker. The unpacker is available free of charge for unlimited time.

"Stuffit standard" is quite a demanding so make sure to do all the steps exactly how it is written below.

  1. Launch Stuffit Expander.
  2. Drag and drop your *.sit file into Stuffit. Otherwise, use the File-Open menu option to choose the archive.
  3. Now, find and select only the icon siles in the archive, otherwise the application can abort when process. Choose all necessary items by holding … or ….. After that, in the main menu choose Expand-Extract.
  4. In the "Extract Dialog" box that will open, press Browse and choose where the icons will be extracted. Click OK. If you have done everything right, you will get the unpacked files in the selected directory.
  5. If the extraction process finished correctly, close Stuffit. The unpacking is finished but there are other tasks to do.

Converting into Windows icons

Now you require one of the listed applications: IconLover, ArtIcons Pro or IconXP. They can easily read MAC icons and turn them to Windows® icons in no time.

You can work with .icns and .rsrc icons the similar way you work with images of other formats: open them with the menu, drag and drop them to the application window, add to icon libraries.

Some Mac icons have only 128x128 images. In this situation, you will need to do 16x16, 32x32 and 48x48 subicons. You are able do it using ArtIcons, IconLover or IconXP and the Tools - New Image Format menu item.

Then, just delete unneeded formats (for example, monochrome) from the icons and you can save them as .ico files!

unpacking icons from *.sit.hqx. files

To complete this task, you will require one other program - TurboZIP (5.0 or newer).

Run it. Then in the program toolbar click "Open" and choose *.hqx in the "file types" menu. In the left window you will see the *.sit.hqx file and in the right field - just *.sit. Then simply drag them using the coursor into any folder (for example, the desktop). After that, unpack the *.sit archive as described above. The only fault of the program is that it is not really stable.
