Converting Mac Icons into Windows Format

There is an opinion that there is much more quality 32-bit icons for MAC OS than for XP or Vista in the Web. However Mac graphics may be simply transformed into the *.ico format and used for Windows. The detailed directions on this task are given here.

Loading and extracting from the archive

Mac icons in the Internet are usually archived. Archives can be of different formats: with the *.sit extension and with the double extension *.sit.hqx. A very rare type is *.sit.sitx, they have to be handled in the same way as *.sit.hqx. To unpack files from the archive you will need a special software. Consider that you need an application, which reads the macintosh archives and works in Windows. The most common of such applications is Stuffit. It can be downloaded here: www.stuffit.com. Standard Edition 8.0 or newer is suggested. The installation file is quite large (8 Mb). Stuffit contains the packer and unpacker. The unpacker can be used free of charge for unlimited time.

"Stuffit standard" is quite a demanding so be sure to do all the steps just how it is written below.

  1. Run Stuffit Expander.
  2. Drag and drop your *.sit archive into Stuffit. Otherwise, go to the File-Open menu item to choose the archive.
  3. Then, find and select just the icon siles in the archive, otherwise the application will abort when process. Select all necessary items by holding … or ….. Then, in the main menu choose Expand-Extract.
  4. In the "Extract Dialog" box that will appear, press Browse and choose where the icons will be unpacked. Press OK. If you have made all the steps right, you will see the extracted files in the specified folder.
  5. If the unpacking process finished successfully, close Stuffit. The unpacking is completed but there are things to do.

Converting into Windows format

Now you require one of the following programs: IconLover, ArtIcons Pro or IconXP. They can quickly understand Macintosh® icons and turn them to Windows® graphics in no time.

You can work with .icns and .rsrc files the same way you work with images of other formats: open them using the menu, drag and drop them into the program window, place to icon libraries.

Sometimes Macintosh® icons have only 128x128 size. In this case, you will need to do 16x16, 32x32 and 48x48 sizes. You are able do it with ArtIcons, IconLover or IconXP and the Tools - New Image Format menu item.

Then, just delete unnecessary formats (for example, monochrome) from the icons and save them as .ico files!

Extracting icons from *.sit.hqx. files

To solve this process, you will use one other application - TurboZIP (5.0 or newer).

Start it. Then in the application toolbar press "Open" and select *.hqx in the "file types" menu. In the left window you will see the *.sit.hqx file and in the right field - just *.sit. Then just drag them using the mouse into any directory (for example, the desktop). Then, unpack the *.sit archive as described above. The only disadvantage of the application is that it is not really stable.
