Transforming Mac Icons into Windows Format

There is an opinion that there is much more quality 32-bit icons for MAC OS than for Windows in the Internet. But Mac graphics may be easily converted into the *.ico format and used for Windows. The detailed instructions on how to do this are below.

Downloading and extracting from the archive

Mac icons in the Internet are often archived. Files can be of two types: with the *.sit extension and with the double extension *.sit.hqx. A very rare type is *.sit.sitx, they have to be handled in the similar way as *.sit.hqx. To unpack icons from the archive you will need an archiver. Consider that you require an application, which understands the MAC archives and works under Windows. The most popular such applications is Stuffit. It can be found here: www.stuffit.com. Standard Edition 8.0 or newer is suggested. The installation file is rather big (8 Mb). Stuffit consists of the packer and extractor. The extractor can be used free of charge for unlimited time.

"Stuffit standard" is rather a capricious so make sure to do everything just how it is written below.

  1. Launch Stuffit Expander.
  2. Drag and drop your *.sit archive into Stuffit. Otherwise, go to the File-Open menu item to choose the archive.
  3. Then, find and choose only the icon siles in the archive, otherwise the program can abort during process. Select all necessary items by holding … or ….. After that, in the main menu choose Expand-Extract.
  4. In the "Extract Dialog" window that will appear, press Browse and choose where the files will be unpacked. Press OK. If you have done all the steps right, you will get the unpacked files in the selected folder.
  5. If the unpacking process finished successfully, close Stuffit. The extraction is finished but there are other tasks to do.

Transforming into Windows format

Now you require one of the following programs: IconLover, ArtIcons Pro or IconXP. They can quickly read Macintosh® icons and turn them into Windows® icons in no time.

You can work with .icns and .rsrc icons the same way you process pictures of other formats: open them with the menu, drag and drop them into the application window, place to icon libraries.

Sometimes Macintosh® icons contains only 128x128 size. In this case, you will need to do 16x16, 32x32 and 48x48 sizes. You can do it with ArtIcons, IconLover or IconXP and the Tools - New Image Format menu item.

Then, just delete unneeded formats (for example, monochrome) from the icons and you can save them as .ico icons!

Extracting icons from *.sit.hqx. files

To solve this process, you will need one other program - TurboZIP (5.0 or newer).

Run it. Then in the application toolbar click "Open" and select *.hqx in the "file types" box. In the left field you will see the *.sit.hqx file and in the right field - just *.sit. Now simply drag them using the mouse into any folder (for example, the desktop). After that, extract the *.sit file as described above. The only fault of the program is that it is not really stable.
