Converting Mac Icons to Windows Format

There is an opinion that there is a lot more quality 32-bit icons for MAC OS than for XP or Vista in the Internet. However Mac graphics can be simply converted into the *.ico files and applied for Windows. The detailed directions on how to do this are below.

Loading and extracting from the archive

Mac graphics in the Internet are usually archived. Files can be of different formats: with the *.sit extension and with two extensions *.sit.hqx. Uncommon version is *.sit.sitx, they should be processed in the same way as *.sit.hqx. To unpack graphics from the archive you will need a special software. Consider that you need an application, which reads the macintosh archives and runs in Windows. The most popular such applications is Stuffit. It can be found here: www.stuffit.com. Standard Edition 8.0 or more recent is suggested. The installation file is rather large (8 Mb). Stuffit contains the packer and unpacker. The unpacker is available free of charge for unlimited time.

"Stuffit standard" is rather a capricious so be sure to do all the steps exactly how it is written below.

  1. Run Stuffit Expander.
  2. Drag and drop your *.sit archive into Stuffit. Otherwise, use the File-Open menu option to open the file.
  3. Now, find and choose only the icon siles in the archive, if not the software can abort during process. specify all required items by pressing … or ….. Then, in the main menu choose Expand-Extract.
  4. In the "Extract Dialog" window that will open, press Browse and choose where the files will be extracted. Click OK. If you have made all the steps right, you will see the extracted files in the selected folder.
  5. If the unpacking process finished successfully, close Stuffit. The extraction is finished but there are other tasks to do.

Converting to Windows format

Now you will need one of the listed programs: IconLover, ArtIcons Pro or IconXP. They can easily read MAC icons and transform them to Windows® icons in no time.

You can process .icns and .rsrc files the same way you work with images of other types: open them with the menu, drag and drop them into the program window, add to icon libraries.

Sometimes Macintosh® icons have only 128x128 images. In this situation, you will have to do 16x16, 32x32 and 48x48 sizes. You are able do it with ArtIcons, IconLover or IconXP and the Tools - New Image Format menu option.

Then, just delete unneeded options (for instance, monochrome) from the pictures and you can save them as .ico files!

unpacking icons from *.sit.hqx. files

To complete this process, you will need one other program - TurboZIP (5.0 or newer).

Open it. Then in the application toolbar click "Open" and choose *.hqx in the "file types" box. In the left window you will see the *.sit.hqx file and in the right field - simply *.sit. Then just drag them using the coursor into any folder (like the desktop). After that, process the *.sit archive as written above. The only fault of the application is that it is not really stable.
