Transforming Mac Icons into Windows Icons

There is an opinion that there is a lot more professional 32-bit icons for MAC OS than for XP or Vista in the Internet. However Mac graphics can be simply transformed into the *.ico format and used for Windows. The detailed directions on how to do this are below.

Loading and unpacking from the archive

Mac icons in the Internet are often archived. Files can be of two formats: with the *.sit extension and with the double extension *.sit.hqx. Uncommon type is *.sit.sitx, they should be processed in the similar way as *.sit.hqx. To unpack graphics from the archive you will need an archiver. Consider that you need an archiver, which understands the macintosh archives and works under Windows. The most common of such applications is Stuffit. It can be found here: www.stuffit.com. Standard Edition 8.0 or more recent is suggested. The file for downloading is quite big (8 Mb). Stuffit contains the packer and unpacker. The extractor is available free of charge for unlimited time.

"Stuffit standard" is quite a demanding so make sure to do all the steps just how it is described below.

  1. Start Stuffit Expander.
  2. Drag and drop your *.sit file into Stuffit. Or, go to the File-Open menu option to open the file.
  3. Then, find and select just the icon siles in the archive, otherwise the program will abort when process. Choose all necessary items by pressing … or ….. Then, in the main menu choose Expand-Extract.
  4. In the "Extract Dialog" window that will open, click Browse and select where the icons will be unpacked. Press OK. When you have done all the steps right, you will see the extracted files in the specified folder.
  5. If the unpacking process completed correctly, close Stuffit. The unpacking is done but there are other tasks to do.

Transforming into Windows format

Now you require one of the listed programs: IconLover, ArtIcons Pro or IconXP. They can quickly read MAC icons and turn them to Windows® graphics in no time.

You can work with .icns and .rsrc files the similar way you work with pictures of other types: open them using the menu, drag and drop them into the application window, place to icon libraries.

Sometimes Macintosh® icons contains only 128x128 size. In this situation, you will need to do 16x16, 32x32 and 48x48 subicons. You are able do it with ArtIcons, IconLover or IconXP and the Tools - New Image Format menu option.

Then, just delete unneeded formats (for example, monochrome) from the pictures and you can save them as .ico icons!

Extracting icons from *.sit.hqx. archives

To solve this process, you will require one other application - TurboZIP (5.0 or newer).

Run it. Then in the application toolbar press "Open" and choose *.hqx in the "file types" box. In the left window you will see the *.sit.hqx file and in the right box - simply *.sit. Then just drag the files using the mouse into any directory (for example, the desktop). Then, unpack the *.sit archive as written above. The only disadvantage of the program is that it is not really stable.
