Converting Mac Icons into Windows Icons

Some people think that there is a lot more professional 32-bit icons for MAC OS than for XP or Vista in the Internet. But Mac icons can be easily transformed into the *.ico files and used for Windows. The detailed directions on how to do this are below.

Loading and extracting from the archive

Mac icons in the Internet are often archived. Archives can be of different formats: with the *.sit extension and with two extensions *.sit.hqx. A very rare type is *.sit.sitx, they have to be processed in the same way as *.sit.hqx. To extract icons from the archive you will need a special software. Consider that you need an application, which reads the MAC archives and runs under Windows. The most common of such archiver is Stuffit. It can be found here: www.stuffit.com. Standard Edition 8.0 or more recent is recommended. The installation file is quite big (8 Mb). Stuffit consists of the packer and extractor. The unpacker can be used for free for unlimited time.

"Stuffit standard" is rather a demanding so be sure to do all the steps exactly how it is described below.

  1. Launch Stuffit Expander.
  2. Drag and drop your *.sit file into Stuffit. Otherwise, go to the File-Open menu item to choose the file.
  3. Now, find and select just the icon siles in the archive, if not the application can abort when process. Choose all necessary items by holding … or ….. Then, in the main menu select Expand-Extract.
  4. In the "Extract Dialog" window that will appear, press Browse and choose where the files will be unpacked. Click OK. When you have made all the steps correctly, you will see the extracted files in the selected directory.
  5. If the extraction process completed correctly, close Stuffit. The unpacking is completed but there are other tasks to do.

Transforming into Windows icons

Now you will need one of the following applications: IconLover, ArtIcons Pro or IconXP. They can easily understand MAC icons and transform them to Windows® graphics in no time.

You can process .icns and .rsrc files the similar way you process images of other types: open them with the menu, drag and drop them to the application window, place to icon libraries.

Some Macintosh® icons contains only 128x128 size. In this case, you will have to do 16x16, 32x32 and 48x48 subicons. You are able do it using ArtIcons, IconLover or IconXP and the Tools - New Image Format menu item.

Now, just delete unnecessary formats (for example, monochrome) from the pictures and save them as .ico files!

Extracting icons from *.sit.hqx. archives

To complete this process, you will require one other program - TurboZIP (5.0 or newer).

Open it. Then in the application toolbar click "Open" and select *.hqx in the "file types" menu. In the left field you will see the *.sit.hqx file and in the right box - just *.sit. Now simply drag them using the coursor into any folder (like the desktop). After that, process the *.sit archive as written earlier. The only fault of the application is that it is not really reliable.
