Transforming Mac Icons to Windows Format

There is an opinion that there is much more professional 32-bit icons for MAC OS than for XP or Vista in the Internet. But Mac graphics can be easily transformed into the *.ico format and used for Windows. The complete directions on this task are below.

Downloading and unpacking from the archive

Mac graphics in the Internet are usually archived. Archives can be of two types: with the *.sit extension and with two extensions *.sit.hqx. Uncommon type is *.sit.sitx, they have to be handled in the similar way as *.sit.hqx. To extract graphics from the archive you require a special software. Consider that you require an archiver, which reads the macintosh archives and works under Windows. The most common of such applications is Stuffit. It can be downloaded here: www.stuffit.com. Standard Edition 8.0 or newer is recommended. The file for downloading is quite big (8 Mb). Stuffit consists of the packer and extractor. The unpacker can be used free of charge for unlimited time.

"Stuffit standard" is rather a demanding so be sure to do all the steps just how it is described below.

  1. Run Stuffit Expander.
  2. Drag and drop your *.sit file into Stuffit. Otherwise, use the File-Open menu option to choose the archive.
  3. Now, find and select only the icon siles in the archive, otherwise the software will abort during process. Select all necessary items by pressing … or ….. After that, in the main menu choose Expand-Extract.
  4. In the "Extract Dialog" window that will appear, press Browse and select where the icons will be unpacked. Press OK. When you have made everything right, you will get the extracted files in the selected folder.
  5. If the unpacking process completed successfully, close Stuffit. The extraction is finished but there are things to be done.

Transforming to Windows icons

Now you require one of the listed programs: IconLover, ArtIcons Pro or IconXP. They can quickly understand Macintosh® icons and turn them to Windows® graphics in no time.

You can process .icns and .rsrc files the same way you process images of other formats: open them using the menu, drag and drop them to the program window, place to icon libraries.

Sometimes Mac icons have only 128x128 size. In this situation, you will have to do 16x16, 32x32 and 48x48 sizes. You can do it with ArtIcons, IconLover or IconXP and the Tools - New Image Format menu option.

Now, just delete unneeded options (for example, monochrome) from the images and you can save them as .ico icons!

unpacking icons from *.sit.hqx. archives

To complete this task, you will need one more program - TurboZIP (5.0 or newer).

Open it. Then in the application toolbar click "Open" and choose *.hqx in the "file types" box. In the left field you will see the *.sit.hqx file and in the right field - just *.sit. Now simply drag the files using the coursor into any folder (like the desktop). Then, extract the *.sit archive as written above. The only disadvantage of the application is that it is not very stable.
