Transforming Mac Icons to Windows Icons

There is an opinion that there is a lot more professional 32-bit icons for MAC OS than for Windows in the Web. However Mac graphics may be simply converted into the *.ico format and used for Windows. The detailed directions on how to do this are below.

Downloading and unpacking from the archive

Mac graphics in the Internet are often archived. Archives can be of two types: with the *.sit extension and with two extensions *.sit.hqx. Uncommon version is *.sit.sitx, they have to be processed in the similar way as *.sit.hqx. To unpack graphics from the archive you will need a special software. Consider that you need an application, which reads the MAC archives and works under Windows. The most common of such archiver is Stuffit. It can be downloaded here: www.stuffit.com. Standard Edition 8.0 or more recent is suggested. The installation file is quite large (8 Mb). Stuffit consists of the packer and extractor. The extractor can be used for free for unlimited time.

"Stuffit standard" is rather a demanding so be sure to do everything just how it is written below.

  1. Launch Stuffit Expander.
  2. Drag and drop your *.sit file into Stuffit. Or, use the File-Open menu option to open the archive.
  3. Now, find and choose just the icons themselves in the archive, if not the program will abort when packing. Choose all required items by pressing … or ….. After that, in the main menu choose Expand-Extract.
  4. In the "Extract Dialog" window that will open, click Browse and select where the files will be extracted. Press OK. When you have done everything right, you will see the unpacked files in the specified folder.
  5. If the unpacking process finished successfully, close Stuffit. The extraction is finished but there are things to do.

Converting into Windows icons

Now you require one of the listed applications: IconLover, ArtIcons Pro or IconXP. They can easily understand MAC icons and turn them into Windows® icons in no time.

You can process .icns and .rsrc files the similar way you process images of other formats: open them with the menu, drag and drop them to the program window, add to icon libraries.

Some Macintosh® icons contains only 128x128 size. In this case, you will need to do 16x16, 32x32 and 48x48 subicons. You can do it using ArtIcons, IconLover or IconXP and the Tools - New Image Format menu option.

Now, just delete unneeded formats (for example, monochrome) from the icons and save them as .ico files!

Extracting icons from *.sit.hqx. files

To complete this process, you will require one other program - TurboZIP (5.0 or newer).

Open it. Then in the program toolbar press "Open" and select *.hqx in the "file types" menu. In the left window you will see the *.sit.hqx file and in the right field - just *.sit. Now simply drag the files using the coursor into any folder (for example, the desktop). After that, extract the *.sit archive as written above. The only fault of the program is that it is not very reliable.
