Transforming Mac Icons into Windows Icons

Some people think that there is a lot more quality 32-bit icons for MAC OS than for XP or Vista in the Internet. But Mac graphics may be simply transformed into the *.ico files and used for Windows. The complete directions on this task are below.

Loading and unpacking from the archive

Mac icons in the Internet are usually archived. Files can be of two types: with the *.sit extension and with two extensions *.sit.hqx. Uncommon type is *.sit.sitx, they should be processed in the similar way as *.sit.hqx. To extract files from the archive you require a special software. Consider that you need an archiver, which reads the macintosh archives and works in Windows. The most popular such archiver is Stuffit. It can be found here: www.stuffit.com. Standard Edition 8.0 or more recent is suggested. The file for downloading is quite large (8 Mb). Stuffit contains the packer and unpacker. The unpacker can be used free of charge for unlimited time.

"Stuffit standard" is quite a capricious so make sure to do all the steps just how it is described below.

  1. Start Stuffit Expander.
  2. Drag and drop your *.sit archive into Stuffit. Or, use the File-Open menu option to choose the file.
  3. Then, find and select just the icons themselves in the archive, if not the software can abort when process. Select all required items by pressing … or ….. After that, in the main menu select Expand-Extract.
  4. In the "Extract Dialog" box that will open, press Browse and select where the files will be unpacked. Press OK. If you have made everything right, you will get the unpacked files in the selected directory.
  5. If the unpacking process completed correctly, close Stuffit. The extraction is finished but there are things to be done.

Transforming to Windows icons

Now you will need one of the listed applications: IconLover, ArtIcons Pro or IconXP. They can easily understand MAC icons and convert them into Windows® graphics in no time.

You can work with .icns and .rsrc files the same way you process images of other formats: open them using the menu, drag and drop them into the application window, add to icon libraries.

Sometimes Macintosh® icons have only 128x128 images. In this case, you will need to do 16x16, 32x32 and 48x48 subicons. You are able do it using ArtIcons, IconLover or IconXP and the Tools - New Image Format menu option.

Then, just delete unneeded options (for example, monochrome) from the icons and you can save them as .ico icons!

Extracting icons from *.sit.hqx. archives

To solve this task, you will require one more program - TurboZIP (5.0 or newer).

Start it. Then in the program toolbar click "Open" and choose *.hqx in the "file types" menu. In the left box you will see the *.sit.hqx file and in the right field - simply *.sit. Then just drag the files using the coursor into any folder (like the desktop). After that, unpack the *.sit archive as described earlier. The only disadvantage of the application is that it is not really stable.
