Transforming Mac Icons to Windows Icons

Some people think that there is a lot more professional 32-bit icons for MAC OS than for XP or Vista in the Web. But Mac icons can be easily converted into the *.ico files and used for Windows. The complete directions on how to do this are given here.

Loading and extracting from the archive

Mac graphics in the Web are usually archived. Archives can be of two types: with the *.sit extension and with two extensions *.sit.hqx. Uncommon type is *.sit.sitx, they have to be processed in the same way as *.sit.hqx. To unpack icons from the archive you require a special software. Note that you require an archiver, which knows the MAC archives and works under Windows. The most common of such applications is Stuffit. It can be found here: www.stuffit.com. Standard Edition 8.0 or newer is suggested. The file for downloading is quite large (8 Mb). Stuffit consists of the packer and extractor. The extractor is available for free for unlimited time.

"Stuffit standard" is rather a demanding so make sure to do everything just how it is written below.

  1. Launch Stuffit Expander.
  2. Drag and drop your *.sit file into Stuffit. Otherwise, go to the File-Open menu option to choose the file.
  3. Now, find and select only the icon siles in the archive, if not the software can abort when process. specify all required items by pressing … or ….. After that, in the main menu choose Expand-Extract.
  4. In the "Extract Dialog" box that will open, click Browse and choose where the icons will be extracted. Click OK. When you have made all the steps correctly, you will see the extracted files in the specified directory.
  5. If the unpacking process finished successfully, close Stuffit. The extraction is done but there are things to do.

Converting into Windows icons

Now you will need one of the listed applications: IconLover, ArtIcons Pro or IconXP. They can easily read Macintosh® icons and transform them to Windows® graphics in no time.

You can process .icns and .rsrc files the similar way you work with pictures of other types: open them using the menu, drag and drop them into the application window, place to icon libraries.

Some Macintosh® icons have only 128x128 size. In this situation, you will have to do 16x16, 32x32 and 48x48 sizes. You are able do it with ArtIcons, IconLover or IconXP and the Tools - New Image Format menu option.

Now, just delete unneeded options (for example, monochrome) from the pictures and you can save them as .ico files!

unpacking icons from *.sit.hqx. files

To complete this task, you will require one more program - TurboZIP (5.0 or newer).

Open it. Then in the program toolbar press "Open" and select *.hqx in the "file types" box. In the left window you will see the *.sit.hqx file and in the right box - simply *.sit. Now just drag the files using the coursor into any directory (for example, the desktop). After that, process the *.sit archive as described earlier. The only disadvantage of the program is that it is not very stable.
