Transforming Mac Icons to Windows Format

Some people think that there is much more quality 32-bit icons for MAC OS than for Windows in the Internet. But Mac graphics can be simply transformed into the *.ico format and used for Windows. The complete directions on how to do this are below.

Loading and extracting from the archive

Mac icons in the Internet are often archived. Archives can be of two formats: with the *.sit extension and with the double extension *.sit.hqx. Uncommon type is *.sit.sitx, they should be processed in the similar way as *.sit.hqx. To unpack files from the archive you will need an archiver. Consider that you need an application, which understands the MAC archives and runs in Windows. The most popular such applications is Stuffit. It can be found here: www.stuffit.com. Standard Edition 8.0 or more recent is suggested. The file for downloading is quite big (8 Mb). Stuffit consists of the packer and unpacker. The extractor can be used free of charge for unlimited time.

"Stuffit standard" is rather a capricious so make sure to do all the steps just how it is written below.

  1. Launch Stuffit Expander.
  2. Drag and drop your *.sit file into Stuffit. Otherwise, go to the File-Open menu option to open the file.
  3. Now, find and select just the icons themselves in the archive, if not the software will abort during packing. Choose all required items by pressing … or ….. Then, in the main menu choose Expand-Extract.
  4. In the "Extract Dialog" window that will open, click Browse and select where the icons will be extracted. Click OK. If you have done all the steps right, you will get the unpacked files in the specified directory.
  5. If the unpacking process finished successfully, close Stuffit. The unpacking is finished but there are other tasks to do.

Converting into Windows icons

Now you require one of the following applications: IconLover, ArtIcons Pro or IconXP. They can quickly read Macintosh® icons and turn them to Windows® graphics in no time.

You can work with .icns and .rsrc files the same way you work with images of other formats: open them using the menu, drag and drop them into the program window, add to icon libraries.

Some Macintosh® icons contains only 128x128 images. In this case, you will have to do 16x16, 32x32 and 48x48 subicons. You can do it using ArtIcons, IconLover or IconXP and the Tools - New Image Format menu item.

Then, just delete unnecessary options (for instance, monochrome) from the pictures and save them as .ico icons!

Extracting icons from *.sit.hqx. archives

To complete this task, you will require one other program - TurboZIP (5.0 or newer).

Open it. Then in the application toolbar click "Open" and select *.hqx in the "file types" box. In the left box you will see the *.sit.hqx file and in the right box - just *.sit. Now simply drag the files using the coursor into any folder (like the desktop). After that, unpack the *.sit archive as described earlier. The only disadvantage of the application is that it is not really stable.
