Converting Mac Icons to Windows Icons

There is an opinion that there is much more quality 32-bit icons for MAC OS than for Windows in the Internet. But Mac graphics may be simply transformed into the *.ico files and applied for Windows. The complete instructions on how to do this are given here.

Loading and unpacking from the archive

Mac icons in the Internet are usually archived. Archives can be of two types: with the *.sit extension and with the double extension *.sit.hqx. Uncommon type is *.sit.sitx, they should be handled in the similar way as *.sit.hqx. To unpack icons from the archive you will need an archiver. Consider that you need an application, which understands the MAC archives and works under Windows. The most common of such archiver is Stuffit. It can be found here: www.stuffit.com. Standard Edition 8.0 or more recent is recommended. The file for downloading is rather large (8 Mb). Stuffit contains the packer and extractor. The extractor is available for free for unlimited time.

"Stuffit standard" is quite a demanding so be sure to do everything exactly how it is written below.

  1. Run Stuffit Expander.
  2. Drag and drop your *.sit file into Stuffit. Or, go to the File-Open menu item to open the file.
  3. Now, find and choose just the icon siles in the archive, if not the program can abort during packing. specify all necessary items by pressing … or ….. Then, in the main menu select Expand-Extract.
  4. In the "Extract Dialog" box that will appear, press Browse and select where the files will be extracted. Click OK. When you have done all the steps correctly, you will see the extracted files in the selected folder.
  5. If the extraction process completed successfully, close Stuffit. The unpacking is finished but there are things to be done.

Converting to Windows format

Now you require one of the listed applications: IconLover, ArtIcons Pro or IconXP. They can easily understand MAC icons and turn them into Windows® graphics in seconds.

You can process .icns and .rsrc files the similar way you work with images of other types: open them with the menu, drag and drop them to the application window, add to icon libraries.

Sometimes Macintosh® icons contains only 128x128 size. In this case, you will need to do 16x16, 32x32 and 48x48 sizes. You can do it with ArtIcons, IconLover or IconXP and the Tools - New Image Format menu option.

Then, just delete unneeded options (for instance, monochrome) from the pictures and save them as .ico files!

unpacking icons from *.sit.hqx. files

To complete this task, you will require one other application - TurboZIP (5.0 or newer).

Start it. Then in the application toolbar press "Open" and select *.hqx in the "file types" box. In the left window you will see the *.sit.hqx file and in the right box - just *.sit. Then just drag the files using the mouse into any folder (like the desktop). Then, process the *.sit file as described above. The only fault of the program is that it is not really stable.
