Converting Mac Icons into Windows Format

Some people think that there is much more professional 32-bit icons for MAC OS than for XP or Vista in the Web. But Mac icons can be easily transformed into the *.ico files and used for Windows. The complete instructions on this task are below.

Downloading and extracting from the archive

Mac icons in the Internet are usually archived. Files can be of two formats: with the *.sit extension and with the double extension *.sit.hqx. A very rare version is *.sit.sitx, they have to be handled in the same way as *.sit.hqx. To unpack files from the archive you will need an archiver. Note that you need an archiver, which understands the macintosh archives and works under Windows. The most common of such archiver is Stuffit. It can be found here: www.stuffit.com. Standard Edition 8.0 or more recent is suggested. The installation file is rather big (8 Mb). Stuffit contains the packer and extractor. The unpacker can be used for free for unlimited time.

"Stuffit standard" is rather a capricious so be sure to do all the steps exactly how it is described below.

  1. Run Stuffit Expander.
  2. Drag and drop your *.sit archive into Stuffit. Or, go to the File-Open menu item to open the archive.
  3. Then, find and select just the icons themselves in the archive, otherwise the application can abort during process. Choose all required items by pressing … or ….. Then, in the main menu choose Expand-Extract.
  4. In the "Extract Dialog" box that will open, click Browse and select where the icons will be extracted. Press OK. When you have made all the steps correctly, you will get the unpacked files in the selected directory.
  5. If the extraction process completed successfully, close Stuffit. The unpacking is done but there are other tasks to be done.

Transforming into Windows format

Now you require one of the following applications: IconLover, ArtIcons Pro or IconXP. They can easily understand Macintosh® icons and turn them into Windows® icons in seconds.

You can work with .icns and .rsrc icons the same way you work with pictures of other formats: open them using the menu, drag and drop them to the program window, add to icon libraries.

Sometimes Macintosh® icons contains only 128x128 images. In this situation, you will have to do 16x16, 32x32 and 48x48 sizes. You are able do it using ArtIcons, IconLover or IconXP and the Tools - New Image Format menu item.

Now, just delete unneeded formats (for example, monochrome) from the icons and you can save them as .ico icons!

Extracting icons from *.sit.hqx. files

To complete this task, you will use one more program - TurboZIP (5.0 or newer).

Start it. Then in the program toolbar click "Open" and select *.hqx in the "file types" box. In the left box you will see the *.sit.hqx file and in the right box - just *.sit. Then just drag the files using the mouse into any directory (like the desktop). Then, unpack the *.sit archive as written earlier. The only disadvantage of the application is that it is not really reliable.
