Converting Mac Icons into Windows Format

There is an opinion that there is a lot more quality 32-bit icons for MAC OS than for Windows in the Internet. However Mac icons can be simply converted into the *.ico files and used for Windows. The detailed instructions on how to do this are below.

Loading and extracting from the archive

Mac graphics in the Internet are usually archived. Files can be of two types: with the *.sit extension and with two extensions *.sit.hqx. Uncommon type is *.sit.sitx, they should be handled in the same way as *.sit.hqx. To unpack graphics from the archive you require a special software. Consider that you need an archiver, which reads the macintosh archives and works under Windows. The most popular such applications is Stuffit. It can be found here: www.stuffit.com. Standard Edition 8.0 or newer is recommended. The installation file is quite large (8 Mb). Stuffit contains the packer and extractor. The extractor is available for free for unlimited time.

"Stuffit standard" is quite a capricious so make sure to do everything just how it is described below.

  1. Launch Stuffit Expander.
  2. Drag and drop your *.sit file into Stuffit. Otherwise, go to the File-Open menu item to choose the file.
  3. Now, find and select only the icon siles in the archive, if not the application will abort during packing. Select all necessary items by pressing … or ….. Then, in the main menu select Expand-Extract.
  4. In the "Extract Dialog" box that will open, click Browse and choose where the icons will be extracted. Click OK. When you have done all the steps right, you will see the extracted files in the selected folder.
  5. If the unpacking process finished correctly, close Stuffit. The unpacking is finished but there are other tasks to do.

Converting to Windows format

Now you require one of the listed programs: IconLover, ArtIcons Pro or IconXP. They can quickly read Macintosh® icons and transform them to Windows® graphics in seconds.

You can process .icns and .rsrc files the same way you process images of other types: open them with the menu, drag and drop them into the application window, place to icon libraries.

Sometimes Macintosh® icons contains only 128x128 size. In this case, you will have to do 16x16, 32x32 and 48x48 sizes. You can do it with ArtIcons, IconLover or IconXP and the Tools - New Image Format menu option.

Then, just delete unnecessary formats (for instance, monochrome) from the pictures and save them as .ico files!

unpacking icons from *.sit.hqx. archives

To complete this process, you will use one more application - TurboZIP (5.0 or newer).

Open it. Then in the program toolbar click "Open" and select *.hqx in the "file types" menu. In the left field you will see the *.sit.hqx file and in the right window - just *.sit. Then just drag the files using the mouse into any folder (like the desktop). After that, unpack the *.sit file as described earlier. The only disadvantage of the program is that it is not really reliable.
