Converting Mac Icons into Windows Format

Some people think that there is a lot more professional 32-bit icons for MAC OS than for XP or Vista in the Internet. But Mac icons may be easily transformed into the *.ico format and applied for Windows. The detailed instructions on how to do this are given here.

Loading and extracting from the archive

Mac graphics in the Web are often archived. Archives can be of different types: with the *.sit extension and with two extensions *.sit.hqx. Uncommon version is *.sit.sitx, they should be handled in the same way as *.sit.hqx. To unpack files from the archive you will need a special software. Consider that you require an application, which understands the macintosh archives and works under Windows. The most common of such applications is Stuffit. It can be downloaded here: www.stuffit.com. Standard Edition 8.0 or newer is suggested. The file for downloading is rather large (8 Mb). Stuffit consists of the packer and extractor. The unpacker is available free of charge for unlimited time.

"Stuffit standard" is rather a demanding so be sure to do everything just how it is written below.

  1. Run Stuffit Expander.
  2. Drag and drop your *.sit archive into Stuffit. Or, use the File-Open menu item to open the archive.
  3. Now, find and choose just the icon siles in the archive, if not the program can abort when packing. Choose all necessary items by pressing … or ….. After that, in the main menu select Expand-Extract.
  4. In the "Extract Dialog" window that will open, press Browse and choose where the icons will be unpacked. Click OK. If you have done all the steps correctly, you will get the extracted files in the selected directory.
  5. If the unpacking process finished successfully, close Stuffit. The extraction is finished but there are things to do.

Transforming to Windows format

Now you will need one of the following applications: IconLover, ArtIcons Pro or IconXP. They can easily understand Macintosh® icons and transform them to Windows® graphics in seconds.

You can process .icns and .rsrc icons the similar way you work with images of other types: open them using the menu, drag and drop them into the program window, add to icon libraries.

Sometimes Macintosh® icons have only 128x128 images. In this case, you will need to do 16x16, 32x32 and 48x48 subicons. You can do it with ArtIcons, IconLover or IconXP and the Tools - New Image Format menu option.

Then, just delete unneeded formats (for example, monochrome) from the images and you can save them as .ico files!

Extracting icons from *.sit.hqx. archives

To complete this process, you will require one more application - TurboZIP (5.0 or newer).

Start it. Then in the program toolbar click "Open" and select *.hqx in the "file types" box. In the left field you will see the *.sit.hqx file and in the right box - just *.sit. Then just drag the files using the coursor into any folder (for example, the desktop). Then, extract the *.sit archive as written earlier. The only fault of the application is that it is not really stable.
