Converting Mac Icons into Windows Format

There is an opinion that there is a lot more professional 32-bit icons for MAC OS than for Windows in the Internet. But Mac icons can be simply transformed into the *.ico format and applied for Windows. The complete instructions on this task are given here.

Loading and extracting from the archive

Mac icons in the Web are often archived. Files can be of two types: with the *.sit extension and with the double extension *.sit.hqx. Uncommon version is *.sit.sitx, they have to be handled in the same way as *.sit.hqx. To extract icons from the archive you require an archiver. Consider that you need an archiver, which understands the MAC archives and runs under Windows. The most common of such archiver is Stuffit. It can be found here: www.stuffit.com. Standard Edition 8.0 or more recent is suggested. The installation file is rather big (8 Mb). Stuffit consists of the packer and extractor. The extractor is available for free for unlimited time.

"Stuffit standard" is rather a capricious so make sure to do everything exactly how it is described below.

  1. Run Stuffit Expander.
  2. Drag and drop your *.sit file into Stuffit. Otherwise, use the File-Open menu item to open the archive.
  3. Now, find and choose just the icon siles in the archive, if not the program can abort during process. specify all required items by pressing … or ….. Then, in the main menu choose Expand-Extract.
  4. In the "Extract Dialog" window that will open, press Browse and select where the icons will be extracted. Click OK. If you have made all the steps correctly, you will see the unpacked files in the specified directory.
  5. If the unpacking process finished successfully, close Stuffit. The unpacking is done but there are other tasks to be done.

Transforming into Windows format

Now you require one of the listed applications: IconLover, ArtIcons Pro or IconXP. They can quickly read MAC icons and convert them into Windows® graphics in seconds.

You can work with .icns and .rsrc icons the similar way you process pictures of other types: open them with the menu, drag and drop them into the program window, add to icon libraries.

Sometimes Macintosh® icons contains only 128x128 images. In this case, you will need to do 16x16, 32x32 and 48x48 sizes. You can do it with ArtIcons, IconLover or IconXP and the Tools - New Image Format menu item.

Now, just delete unneeded options (for instance, monochrome) from the icons and you can save them as .ico icons!

unpacking icons from *.sit.hqx. files

To solve this process, you will require one more application - TurboZIP (5.0 or newer).

Open it. Then in the application toolbar click "Open" and choose *.hqx in the "file types" box. In the left field you will see the *.sit.hqx file and in the right box - just *.sit. Then simply drag them using the mouse into any directory (like the desktop). After that, extract the *.sit file as described earlier. The only fault of the application is that it is not really reliable.
