Converting Mac Icons to Windows Format

Some people think that there is much more professional 32-bit icons for MAC OS than for Windows in the Web. However Mac graphics can be easily transformed into the *.ico format and applied for Windows. The complete instructions on how to do this are given here.

Downloading and unpacking from the archive

Mac graphics in the Web are often archived. Files can be of different types: with the *.sit extension and with the double extension *.sit.hqx. Uncommon version is *.sit.sitx, they have to be handled in the same way as *.sit.hqx. To extract icons from the archive you will need a special software. Consider that you need an application, which knows the MAC archives and runs under Windows. The most common of such applications is Stuffit. It can be found here: www.stuffit.com. Standard Edition 8.0 or newer is recommended. The installation file is quite big (8 Mb). Stuffit consists of the packer and extractor. The extractor is available for free for unlimited time.

"Stuffit standard" is quite a demanding so be sure to do all the steps just how it is described below.

  1. Run Stuffit Expander.
  2. Drag and drop your *.sit file into Stuffit. Or, go to the File-Open menu item to choose the archive.
  3. Then, find and choose only the icons themselves in the archive, otherwise the program can abort during packing. Choose all required items by pressing … or ….. After that, in the main menu choose Expand-Extract.
  4. In the "Extract Dialog" window that will open, click Browse and select where the files will be extracted. Press OK. If you have done all the steps right, you will get the unpacked files in the specified directory.
  5. If the extraction process finished correctly, close Stuffit. The extraction is finished but there are things to do.

Converting into Windows icons

Now you require one of the following applications: IconLover, ArtIcons Pro or IconXP. They can easily understand Macintosh® icons and transform them into Windows® graphics in seconds.

You can work with .icns and .rsrc icons the similar way you process images of other types: open them with the menu, drag and drop them to the program window, add to icon libraries.

Sometimes Macintosh® icons have only 128x128 images. In this situation, you will have to do 16x16, 32x32 and 48x48 sizes. You are able do it with ArtIcons, IconLover or IconXP and the Tools - New Image Format menu item.

Now, just delete unneeded options (for instance, monochrome) from the images and save them as .ico files!

unpacking icons from *.sit.hqx. archives

To complete this task, you will require one more application - TurboZIP (5.0 or newer).

Run it. Then in the application toolbar click "Open" and select *.hqx in the "file types" box. In the left window you will see the *.sit.hqx file and in the right box - simply *.sit. Then simply drag the files using the coursor into any directory (for example, the desktop). After that, extract the *.sit file as described earlier. The only fault of the program is that it is not really stable.
