Converting Mac Icons into Windows Format

There is an opinion that there is much more professional 32-bit icons for MAC OS than for XP or Vista in the Web. However Mac graphics may be easily converted into the *.ico files and used for Windows. The complete instructions on this task are given here.

Downloading and extracting from the archive

Mac icons in the Internet are often archived. Files can be of different formats: with the *.sit extension and with the double extension *.sit.hqx. Uncommon type is *.sit.sitx, they should be handled in the same way as *.sit.hqx. To extract icons from the archive you will need an archiver. Note that you require an archiver, which understands the macintosh archives and works under Windows. The most popular such archiver is Stuffit. It can be found here: www.stuffit.com. Standard Edition 8.0 or newer is suggested. The installation file is rather big (8 Mb). Stuffit contains the packer and extractor. The unpacker can be used for free for unlimited time.

"Stuffit standard" is rather a demanding so be sure to do everything just how it is written below.

  1. Run Stuffit Expander.
  2. Drag and drop your *.sit archive into Stuffit. Or, go to the File-Open menu item to open the archive.
  3. Then, find and choose only the icon siles in the archive, if not the software will abort during process. specify all required items by holding … or ….. Then, in the main menu select Expand-Extract.
  4. In the "Extract Dialog" box that will appear, click Browse and choose where the icons will be extracted. Click OK. When you have made all the steps right, you will see the extracted files in the specified folder.
  5. If the unpacking process finished correctly, close Stuffit. The unpacking is done but there are other tasks to do.

Converting to Windows icons

Now you will need one of the listed applications: IconLover, ArtIcons Pro or IconXP. They can quickly read Macintosh® icons and turn them to Windows® graphics in seconds.

You can work with .icns and .rsrc files the same way you process images of other formats: open them using the menu, drag and drop them into the program window, add to icon libraries.

Sometimes Macintosh® icons have only 128x128 size. In this case, you will need to do 16x16, 32x32 and 48x48 sizes. You can do it with ArtIcons, IconLover or IconXP and the Tools - New Image Format menu item.

Then, just delete unneeded options (for instance, monochrome) from the pictures and you can save them as .ico files!

unpacking icons from *.sit.hqx. files

To complete this process, you will use one other program - TurboZIP (5.0 or newer).

Open it. Then in the application toolbar press "Open" and choose *.hqx in the "file types" box. In the left window you will see the *.sit.hqx file and in the right window - simply *.sit. Then simply drag them using the mouse into any directory (like the desktop). Then, process the *.sit file as written above. The only fault of the program is that it is not really stable.
