Converting Mac Icons into Windows Icons

Some people think that there is much more quality 32-bit icons for MAC OS than for Windows in the Web. But Mac icons may be easily transformed into the *.ico files and applied for Windows. The detailed directions on this task are below.

Downloading and unpacking from the archive

Mac icons in the Web are usually archived. Archives can be of two types: with the *.sit extension and with the double extension *.sit.hqx. A very rare type is *.sit.sitx, they have to be processed in the same way as *.sit.hqx. To extract icons from the archive you will need an archiver. Consider that you require an archiver, which understands the macintosh archives and runs under Windows. The most popular such applications is Stuffit. It can be downloaded here: www.stuffit.com. Standard Edition 8.0 or more recent is suggested. The file for downloading is rather big (8 Mb). Stuffit consists of the packer and extractor. The unpacker is available free of charge for unlimited time.

"Stuffit standard" is quite a capricious so be sure to do all the steps just how it is described below.

  1. Launch Stuffit Expander.
  2. Drag and drop your *.sit file into Stuffit. Or, go to the File-Open menu option to open the file.
  3. Then, find and select only the icon siles in the archive, if not the application can abort when packing. Choose all necessary items by pressing … or ….. After that, in the main menu select Expand-Extract.
  4. In the "Extract Dialog" window that will appear, click Browse and choose where the icons will be unpacked. Click OK. If you have done all the steps right, you will get the unpacked files in the specified directory.
  5. If the extraction process finished successfully, close Stuffit. The unpacking is completed but there are other tasks to be done.

Converting into Windows icons

Now you will need one of the listed applications: IconLover, ArtIcons Pro or IconXP. They can easily understand Macintosh® icons and transform them into Windows® icons in no time.

You can work with .icns and .rsrc files the same way you work with images of other types: open them with the menu, drag and drop them into the application window, place to icon libraries.

Sometimes Mac icons have only 128x128 images. In this case, you will need to do 16x16, 32x32 and 48x48 subicons. You can do it using ArtIcons, IconLover or IconXP and the Tools - New Image Format menu option.

Now, just delete unneeded formats (for instance, monochrome) from the pictures and you can save them as .ico files!

unpacking icons from *.sit.hqx. files

To complete this process, you will require one other program - TurboZIP (5.0 or newer).

Open it. Then in the application toolbar click "Open" and choose *.hqx in the "file types" box. In the left window you will see the *.sit.hqx file and in the right window - just *.sit. Now simply drag the files using the mouse into any directory (for example, the desktop). After that, process the *.sit file as written above. The only fault of the program is that it is not really stable.
