Converting Mac Icons to Windows Icons

There is an opinion that there is much more professional 32-bit icons for MAC OS than for XP or Vista in the Internet. But Mac icons can be easily converted into the *.ico format and used for Windows. The detailed directions on how to do this are given here.

Loading and unpacking from the archive

Mac icons in the Web are usually archived. Files can be of different types: with the *.sit extension and with two extensions *.sit.hqx. Uncommon version is *.sit.sitx, they have to be handled in the same way as *.sit.hqx. To unpack icons from the archive you will need a special software. Note that you need an archiver, which understands the MAC archives and works in Windows. The most common of such archiver is Stuffit. It can be downloaded here: www.stuffit.com. Standard Edition 8.0 or newer is suggested. The installation file is quite large (8 Mb). Stuffit contains the packer and unpacker. The extractor is available free of charge for unlimited time.

"Stuffit standard" is rather a demanding so be sure to do all the steps exactly how it is described below.

  1. Start Stuffit Expander.
  2. Drag and drop your *.sit archive into Stuffit. Or, use the File-Open menu option to choose the archive.
  3. Then, find and select just the icons themselves in the archive, otherwise the program can abort when process. Select all necessary items by holding … or ….. Then, in the main menu choose Expand-Extract.
  4. In the "Extract Dialog" box that will open, click Browse and select where the files will be unpacked. Press OK. When you have made everything right, you will see the unpacked files in the selected directory.
  5. If the unpacking process completed successfully, close Stuffit. The extraction is finished but there are other tasks to do.

Converting to Windows icons

Now you require one of the following applications: IconLover, ArtIcons Pro or IconXP. They can easily understand MAC icons and transform them into Windows® icons in no time.

You can process .icns and .rsrc files the same way you work with pictures of other types: open them using the menu, drag and drop them into the program window, place to icon libraries.

Sometimes Macintosh® icons contains only 128x128 images. In this situation, you will need to do 16x16, 32x32 and 48x48 subicons. You are able do it using ArtIcons, IconLover or IconXP and the Tools - New Image Format menu option.

Now, just delete unnecessary options (for instance, monochrome) from the pictures and you can save them as .ico files!

unpacking icons from *.sit.hqx. files

To complete this process, you will use one more application - TurboZIP (5.0 or newer).

Open it. Then in the application toolbar press "Open" and choose *.hqx in the "file types" box. In the left box you will see the *.sit.hqx file and in the right window - just *.sit. Then just drag them using the coursor into any folder (for example, the desktop). After that, unpack the *.sit archive as written above. The only fault of the program is that it is not very stable.
